“100% false. They would just pander for votes of state legislators rather than voters.”

True. That said, pandering to 100 people for votes would cost a whole lot less taxpayer money than pandering to millions.

the 17th wasn’t as bad as the 19th. Repeal them both.

I support this. Think it would also help with incumbency as new governor are going to want to appoint their guys.

And the downside of pandering to a hundred versus millions is...? Not that I'm calling state legislators intellectual titans, but it's that, or appealing to most of St. Louis (uneducated, uninformed, etc.) to get elected in Missouri as an example.

This. And the states would certainly push back on all the crap forced on them by the federal government these days. Since the 17th was passed, there is no real check on the power of the federal government and its bureaucracy.

I’m not familiar with West Virginia politics but I’m pretty sure it’s a very red state. Old school, hard working union people who believe in American values. If the state legislature elected the Senators, Manchin would have been ousted years ago.

Edited for grammar

Kinda wish I could upvote that one twice. Could be my first agreement with a “RollTider”.

Basically, the state legislature would have done what was good for the state, and sent a different senator to DC that had the best interests of the state at heart. You have a popular election, and anyone that talks about equity, the working man, and all that BS, get elected by people that haven't read a newspaper all year, let along read a reputable news site.

That's why the repeal of the 17th is important, but also not going to happen.

What I said earlier make each district an elector vote instead of whole state winner take all. With the race to 270 so tight you would lose a lot of fringe candidates and crazy idea. Winning SF NY and LA would only be a handful of electors instead of close to 100. You would need to win all areas of the nation

That's off topic, and is about to start a whirlpool of BS, we're talking about the 17th amendment.

Ultimately, even that doesn't matter when the supreme court rules that state legislatures don't actually own their own elections, and it's ok the courts make decisions (PA).

Federalism exists for a reason, which is part of the reason that there were two senators for each state, of any size, to stop the little states from getting curb stomped by the Virginias of the revolutionary world.

None of this is the problem, which is that the people are corrupt, lazy, and animated by self interest instead of justice. Success has ruined the moral fiber of the people.

Absolutely.

The sad thing is there are a lot of so-called "progressives" who want to apportion senators based on population the same way members of the House are chosen. Their "logic" is California should have more senators than Wyoming because the former has a much larger population than the latter.

I concur but I don't have a high degree of faith in state legislators... they are addicted to FedGov handouts...

Ever since we moved to direct election of Senators, it has been a slow March downhill. Put the power back into the hands of the States and most of the current nonsense gets put out to pasture.

Too late.

Just like term limits you will never wrestle power out of the hands of those who wield it without force.

Term limits would be a better fix.
