Her father was a colonel in the Siad Barre regime, a lot of what she says when she talks about this stuff is projection. You didn't advance that far up the chain of command in the army of a Soviet backed dictator without getting your hands dirty.
When the regime collapsed they had to flee to a refugee camp in Kenya. They were briefly resettled in Arlington, VA (much like Haftar from Libya) and there are conspiracy theories her father may have been an intel source for the US. Most Somalians who worked with Barre didn't have the same fortune as his family. FWIW she always pretends he was a teacher but within the Minnesota Somali community he was a man of influence and known as "the Colonel." He was not just some random teacher.
Her backstory is something I don't think a lot of people are aware of and it explains her militancy IMO.
