the US and Iran did not have diplomatic relations since 1979. There was no conversation between the two governments except through intermediaries
the face to face conversations between Kerry and the Iranian foreign minister were the first since khomeini took over. Recall that even the release of the hostages in 1980 was done through back channels with no direct communication between the US and Iran. There was no reason to discuss return of the Iranian assets as they had been seized as part of economic and political sanctions in effect for decades
The JPAC included easing of those sanctions in return for Iranian cooperation in non proliferation of their nuclear weapons program, thus the return of the money plus interest. The pact was hotly debated and you can argue against it all you want, but facts are facts and this “Obama gave our enemies pallets of cash” BS is non factual

So Iran got a gob of cash that they’d otherwise never, ever get back, because Hussein and Kerry struck a quid pro quo, with Iran never intending to fully uphold their end of the bargain.

come on man.
you hold in your hands the portal to inform yourself on the multi year negotiations between Iran, the US, the EU and the UN that resulted in the JPAC. You also have access to all the inspections and reporting that are a matter of record and are on going.
yes, we retuned their money plus interest.
the reason we did that was twofold...it wasn’t ours and it was required by international law.

400MM of that (the currency) was return of Iranian assets. Prior to the revolution Iran paid that 400MM for fighter jets which were never delivered once the hostages were taken
It amazes me that this is considered valid.
If I pay you for a car. Some dude kills me. Moves into my house. You don't owe HIM the car AND, he's not the one out any money

3 on 1 negotiations that resulted in the US sending taxpayer money to a hostile govt?

What, exactly, would happen to Iran if it officially were found to breach the deal?
Would they have to give the money back?
Edit: Perhaps you see the point. I’d sign any piece of paper to get over a billion dollars and play nice for a while.
Restart nuclear weapons program? Doesn’t matter, got the money, honey.

resumption of economic and political sanctions as outlined in the agreement should you choose to research it yourself
would have to return their own money?
that they used to pay for goods they did not receive?
what do you think?

OP referred to it as “taxpayer money”.
the 400MM was Iranian funds
You think we were keeping that money in a special account?

You can’t be this naive... Do you really think Iran intended in good faith for this to be a permanent arrangement? I doubt anyone in the Obama administration did.
Why don’t YOU research what Obama aide Ben Rhodes thought about people who were duped by the Iran deal.

Recent history must never be compared to current action. We must protect Barack the Benevolent at all costs.

I agree with your sentiment, but it wasn't taxpayers money. It was frozen Iranian assets from 35 years prior. Barry Soetoro paid for Iran's terror apparatus in the ME, Venezuela , and Argentina

Obama funded Islamic terrorism with American taxpayer money and supplied guns to the Mexican drug cartels.
It’s right in their face and they still deny it.

How many times does this stupid talking point have to be regurgitated on this board and Fox News? It was THEIR money. Our government STOLE it from them back in the 70’s. An international court was ruling against us and the settlement was going to be for more than what we gave back. Holy frick.
I will never understand this country’s fascination with Iran or the desire to stay in a perpetual war in the ME. We have no more money. We are deficit spending to blow up goat herders to the tune of trillions of dollars. It’s insanity.

What would the international court do if we ignored them?
Not a fricking thing.

This has to be the dumbest thing I’ve read on the Poli Board in a while.

You can solve this by reading some of your posts. Then nothing else will be able to make the top 25

So you have no answer to the question. Shocked I am!

Not stolen, frozen. Had a little something to do with sanctions. There really hasn't been much change in those sanctions since 1979. Probably added to, actually.
But as far as what's behind "this country's fascination with Iran".....probably just put a blindfold on and threw a dart at a map, and bam.....Iran.
Seriously though man, there's a lot of well-known bases for our special attention to Iran. It's well documented.
