Reasons to not legislate motorcycle helmet requirements

I posted a spin-off thread in the OTL, but figured I would receive actual thoughts here, as opposed to sarcasm and annoyances.
Currently only 19 states and DC require helmets to be worn when driving/riding a motorcycle. This is in comparison to all 50 states having seat-belt laws, and only 15 of those 50 have it being a secondary offense (meaning a cop CANT pull you over for it). So we have 35 states that you can literally be pulled over for not wearing a seat-belt, but you can freely ride without a helmet in 31 states. Seems a little ridiculous to me.
What are your thoughts on the reasoning behind states legislating seat belt laws, but not motorcycle helmet laws?

Seat belt laws are just to generate revenue for the state

I don't know about all that, but laws aren't what keep me wearing my helmet and seatbelt.

I wonder how much of this has to do with insurance rates

It's about revenue generation and controlling the population. You cannot take away all their freedoms at once, but if you chip away, little by little, over many years, the majority will become compliant.

While I agree that originally it was about revenue generation, does anyone think the government ever has our safety needs at the forefront of their thought process when making a law like this? Like I dont see why safety wouldn't be their focus, as opposed to revenue generation. I dont know about now, but when I did live in Louisiana they couldn't pull you over for not wearing it, so, in that case, I could see the public's safety being the motivation. Along with reducing state costs of health care, first responders, etc.

IMHO, riding a motorcycle usually marks you as “too dumb to live” anyway given your low visibility and lack of protection in a collision.
A helmet can make a difference but it’s limited by what you hit and at what speed. If you are hitting a tree, that helmet probably isn’t saving you anyway.
By contrast, most cars are engineered safely enough that having and using seat belts will severely limit damage to you.
You can still end up in a no win situation by getting hit by a truck or driving off a cliff, but it’s not like you will sustain permanent damage if you get hit by a SmartCar like if you were on a motorcycle.

I've written about 'self assumed risk' a lot here and before I came to this board. The short story:
If laws which merely protect an individual from risking his own safety are justified, then police should ticket fat drivers. Being fat increases your risk of heart attack, stroke and diabetes.
Therefore, cops should carry a scale and a healthy weight chart in their squad car and ticket you five bucks per every pound over ideal weight.
If you are opposed to this idea yet in favor of seat belt laws then you have severe problems with logic.

Motorcycles are for idiots. Ban helmets and let them die off

The problem with riding with no helmet is that when the rock kicks up and hits you in the face, if you lose control there is a several hundred pound steaming hot machine free flying on the roadway with the potential to kill someone else. It ain't your freedom to get a rock in your head or eye when the motorcycle is out of control; it's my freedom from the predictable risk that you are creating.
And there's also the bit about your brain injury and my taxes paying for Medicaid/Medicare when you are learning to walk again.

1. It never happens.
2. My machine is not steaming hot.
3. If a bee flies into your face mask (it happened to me twice) you could lose control and kill someone.
Wanta try again?

Happened to me out in Utah. Not a fun time. Thank goodness I was in a low speed zone.

It's never been the government's job to prevent me from doing stupid things that might harm me, and only me. Any laws that do that are an overreach.

And, yes, when it landed on my nose I went cross-eyed.

Government should just ban motorcycles...

Sign a waiver with the state that you abstain from wearing protective head gear you forfeit your right to insurance protection and payments to trauma center for injuries to your noggin'. I'm good if this is incorporated...you remain insured and other parts of your body are covered. Other law is as now.
