quote:

Abraham–himself a doctor before his election to the U.S. Congress–leveled the governor and his state Secretary of Health, Dr. Rebekah Gee, by detailing how widespread waste, fraud, and abuse has been in Edwards’ health program–and how it has hurt people who need access to Medicaid.

“We’re here today to draw attention to John Bel’s Department of Health, one of the most ineffective and poorly run government agencies in Louisiana—which is saying something,” Abraham said at the press conference

quote:

Before I begin, let me be clear that our problem is not with the workers within the Department. They can do only what they are instructed to do. Our problem is with the people in charge: the governor, the division of administration, and the secretary of health, Dr. Gee. Let’s walk through a timeline of the biggest debacle in the Department right now, Medicaid expansion—what our governor calls his greatest accomplishment. The government made the decision to take one of the worst versions of Medicaid expansion available, and rushed it to the market knowing full well that they did not have the tools to administer it or ensure that the people who were enrolled in it were even eligible. This led to hundreds of millions of dollars being spent on individuals who are not eligible for Medicaid. They got caught. And instead of stopping, acknowledging the problem and fixing it, they rushed again to cover up their failures and ended up kicking people off who were actually eligible to be on the rolls. Then they got caught doing that, and instead of stopping, acknowledging and fixing the problem, they made more excuses and ended up canceling the largest MCO contract in the state for what I will add was clearly political retribution.

Nearly half a billion dollars has gone missing under Edwards, Abraham charged, and hundreds of wealthier individuals who should not be on Medicaid given they make six-figure salaries have ended up the state’s Medicaid rolls:

quote:

Let’s quickly talk about the massive waste, fraud, and abuse within the Department. The Department of Health has wasted nearly $500 million of taxpayer money. To put that into context, that’s equal to the half-cent sales tax that John Bel passed. The governor and the Department of Health have enrolled more than 1,600 on Medicaid who make six-figure incomes. Think about that for a minute. While this is going on, John Bel has killed every attempt to fix the problem. He won’t use accurate data like state income tax to verify income and has killed every measure to reform the Department. The governor’s goal is to get as many people on state-sponsored healthcare as possible. You know who this hurts more than the taxpayers? It hurts the people who actually need the services.

quote:

Abraham also ripped Edwards for skyrocketing Department of Health spending–an extra billion dollars per year for every year Edwards has been governor–with no plan to pay for it all:

quote:

Let’s talk about the unsustainable pace of spending. The Louisiana Department of Health’s budget has grown more than a billion dollars every year of this administration—a billion. That’s a faster rate than any other state in America, and it is completely unsustainable. The Louisiana Department of Health’s budget now makes up nearly half—half—of our state’s total budget. Right now, the total state budget including federal is $34.7 billion. $14.8 billion of that goes to the Department of Health. This will only get worse in 2020 when the federal match rate goes down. Additionally, John Bel refuses to give the legislature or the public any real answers as to how much state general fund money this massive program is going to cost our state. We have yet to hear a plan from John Bel on how he intends to pay for that. I’ll tell you what his plan is—it’s his plan for everything: raise your taxes.

You may hate Bobby Jindal and I certainly do but he was absolutely politically, financially and morally justified in doing everything he could to make sure Louisiana never got into this medicaid expansion boondoggle for as long he was Governor.

Good on Ralph for shining a light on what a clusterfrick this has been, as often is the case with growing government and the swamp inevitably getting bigger.

This is how you respond to bogus ads about the donation of salary: by pointing to your opponent's actual incompetence and/or malfeasance using facts.

The Trump effect is that Republicans are learning how to fight and how to win. Let's hope Louisiana voters are smart enough not to vote Democrat again.

I’m wondering if Abraham will end the Medicaid Expansion program? I haven’t heard him say this but I think it’s incredibly savvy not to. Instead attack JBE on his incompetence. There’s plenty to go after but eliminating coverage (entitlement) could become major headache for GOP.

He’s said several times that he wouldn’t kick any eligible recipient off the rolls. Once you turn on the faucet, it’s really hard to shut off.

I’ve been saying this. But the serial Edwards backers here keep telling us that the Feds are paying for this and we pay less than 10% so who cares.

If the Feds ever come asking for their fraudulently spent dollars we are screwed.

Edwards has been giving the goodies while raising taxes. Jobs are leaving La. Citizens are leaving.

But we have a surplus!!!

So wait a minute...

You mean JBE didn’t save that woman’s life from cancer as his commercials imply?!

And it wasn’t FREE?!

OMG! Next you’ll be telling me there is no EASTER BUNNY!

IMO, this is Ralph's strongest point of contention. JBE can't go toe to toe with Ralph on this and everything he has done is a fricking nightmare.

I can honestly say this is the first time I've seen Abraham's face.

Weird, I didn't see this covered in the Advocate this morning.

Must be fake news.

It’s obvious to me that the Dem strategy is to downplay the first primary and to keep interest low and turnout low in hopes the Dem machine can turnout their vote.

Rispone, Abraham and the RGA need to keep this up. Hopefully the debates get heated and the Advocate and others will have to cover them.

It’s not a great economy, the surplus isn’t due to good management and spending is out of control in Medicaid.

A short article about the same in the Shreveport Times today - contrast the Times article with Breitbart. I'm not linking the Times b/c I despise Gannett's website(s).

Mom brings 6 kids (all hers), with 4 different last names, to the Doctor's office for a routine checkup. Each child carrying the newest iphone wearing $120 shoes, while mom waits in the lobby with her coach purse. When the kids are finished, mom just walks out, not even bothering to go to the front desk to pay. Don't worry, the tax payers got it.

Meanwhile, the reimbursement rate to the clinic for this visit is 35% of the original fees. The clinic is losing money to take care of/cure people and has to reduce staff (good paying jobs) to offset expenses. How backwards have we become as a society that this is ok?

This is what government control looks like. Those 6 kids only see mom leaving places without paying because they believe its all taken care of. If everyone is dependent on the state, then the politicians are needed more and more. The government will continue to grow and need more money to fund. Where do you think that money comes from?.....US

If there’s a reason not to love Abraham as a candidate, I haven’t seen it yet.

that seems like suicide for 2 reasons

1. black turnout is significantly decreased in runoffs

2. the GOP has an identity crisis with 2 very blah guys with even more blah personalities who don't relate to SLA. if JBE is going to win, it needs to be when the GOP is divided and don't have a real identifying, unifying vision

I wasn’t clear, I was thinking by downplaying the first primary the conservatives wouldn’t get riled up and the Dem machine would carry the day.

Sorry
