Also, we were deploying nonstop babysitting Saddam, so just to shut those deployments down and stop putting troops at risk from continual risk at Khobar Towers and the USS Cole type events

I simply refuse to believe anyone truly believed this (pre-surge at least)

I know man. I was a young lance corporal in the grunts all about the war in Iraq but I think I really just wanted to go get some. I’ve grown more mature as I’ve grown up.

I didn't think it was a great idea big picture but I wanted to go. I had broke a few bones in a car wreck in DEC '02 and could have stayed home on a dead man's profile but I waved my profile as soon as the deployment orders came down. That was the last deployment I was pumped about.

Also, remember, the military was in massive drawdown, so huge numbers were getting out and fewer and fewer people could fill deployments because the remaining guys were old broke retirement age people or lots of young people...the 4-8 year guys took the money and ran

If I had to guess, probably near 100% approve of getting out of Afghanistan.

Probably more split on Syria.

lets see, do the rank and file soldiers numbering barely 2000 surrounded by millions of muslims looking for ways to kill them at any moment just for being there.

do these soldiers object at being brought home to live in safety able to be fricking their wives and girlfriends rather then serve no fricking purpose except as human targets for sheep frickers

well i dont know skippy, that a hard question to ask

I suppose I'm rank and file. To paraphrase Ed Harris in The Abyss: so long as I get a check stamped "Department of Defense," I go where they tell me.

I’m retired.

I believe IF the U.S. military goes anywhere, it should kill everyone until nobody fights back.

That way we don’t have to go back and we avoid some conflicts.

So if we are not going to kill until the killing stops, we should come home and secure the border.

Well, seems like the Board Grunts are behind Trump pulling out, instead of Mattis. I guess it's the Top Brass that makes the promises to Allies who join the fight, but who will be left hanging if we cut out. Having never borne the battle, I haven't earned the cred to back up Mattis (His loyalty to Allies, and the damage to our Policy cred) call to stay...but I wonder if Mattis reflects the feelings of the people He commands. Tough one, especially re the Kurds.

Well, likely a political winner for Trump, holding to another promise he made. At least as long a terror camps don't spring up again and another Tower goes down.

A lot of our best got slammed hard. But with future high tech stuff (Super sonics, Space Force, Bio/Genetic mutation Weaponry, EMP, Cyber, etc., I think the old days of "boots on the ground" are coming to a close.

Thanks to the Guys in the boots.

If I was a rank and file guy then I probably would be happy not to be stationed Syria mainly bc I would be less worried about getting killed.

My grandfather was in the German Army during the 1940s and he says that he supports the US pullout from Syria. He's pretty old, though, so, he may have been thinking that I was talking about some woman named Syria.

Love the Kurds. Great people and they've been around for thousands of years against force after force. They survived before the CIA and US military gave them aid, the'll survive when we're gone.

Until the rules of engagement are changed from the puss@fication that they are now back to when we could actually engage the enemy with animosity, we will never win these types of wars. I actually realized this back when I was being fired upo n, in Nam, but was told to stand down!

Politicians should not govern the rules of war unless they have experienced true terror under fire.

Can confirm. I have first hand knowledge of a 1SG attached to an aviation maintenance unit receiving a CAB for being on a flight line in Jalalabad when a mortar round hit.
