Yep. Also, you can sometimes find good deals in pawn shops.

Can I simply walk into a gun store and make a purchase? Would you suggest another way of going about it?

Fortunately you indicate that you live in that great second amendment haven Louisiana.

Yes if your background is as clean as you indicate, you just walk in, select (this may be a problem since you waited for the boat to take on water before shopping for a life preserver), negotiate (timing again sucks), fill out form, wait for them to call in, pay, and walk away more secure. Ummm, ammo, lots and lots of ammo. Then practice, lots of practice.

Internet purchase is viable. Find a local firearms dealer for transfer. Perhaps better selection but longer wait.

Gun show as others have pointed out.

Used market, private individuals, pawn shops, etc.

I just purchased another handgun Sunday. Normally when I buy any gun the background check took less than 30 minutes. This most recent purchase was a 3 day wait. I also have a clean background, but its so backed up right now with everyone buying, its taking longer.

As long as you do what you have to do, you will get your firearm within the week.

The handgun will have a 3 day waiting period.

You should be able to leave the store with the rifle.

Concealed permit cuts much of the red tape.

This is absolutely false.
The only thing that will stop anyone leaving the store with the gun in hand is the background check.

I have my concealed permit, as well as a top secret clearance.....its still was a 3 day wait for the background check. Everyone is buying right now and its going to be a delay.

I just bought a pistol this week. They didn’t have the one I wanted in the store, so they ordered it for me. It only took about 3-4 days to come in. I had to fill out minimal paperwork, they did a background check which took about 10 minutes, and I got my pistol and left.

Less than an hour if your background is clean.

If you are as clean as you say the background check should come back clear and IF there is a gun you want you should walk out with it.

If you're talking about firearms for home defense, a pump shotgun should definitely be in your aresenal.

So what kind of things slow down the background checks?

Burkdhead is the second person inside a week who indicated that internet posting got them.

You have to fill out the questionnaire. However, finding what you want and ammo maybe the biggest challenge. May need to buy online and have shipped to an approved vender.

Work with the smaller gun shops not the big chains.

In Georgia, you walk in ,choose a gun or 5, fill out paperwork, wait 15 minutes for the background check, walk out with guns.

I did that Saturday. Sig 9mm, Ruger Ar15 556 pistol, AR10 .308 joined my collection.

Expect new inventory to be sparse. It was already low due to the pandemic, but the last two weeks have really made it tough to find certain models. Not to mention ammo.

Whether you order online or buy from an FFL, it may be worth doing so through an FFL that has access to the NICS online system. From my experience (and the posts in this thread), the call-in background checks may result in delays that the online checks otherwise wouldn’t see. It took my favorite FFL all of 30 seconds to run my check back in late March (they had just been added to the online system).
