Purchasing guns nowadays

This may or not be the right board, but it's definitely a political topic pretty often.
Anyways, I have not owned any guns for over 15 yrs. That will be changing within the next couple of weeks. I will get a S&W 2.0 handgun (or a Glock 19), and a rifle (haven't decided which model).
My background is clean as can be. What kind of shitshow am I in for? Can I simply walk into a gun store and make a purchase? Would you suggest another way of going about it?
Not looking for suggestions on which models to purchase.

There's very sparse inventory for guns and even sparser for ammo currently.

About a 5-10 minute background check (there could be a delay in which an extra day or two would be needed. But it’s nothing more than buying today and picking it up a couple days later. No extra hoops or scrutiny)

Uh, yeah

Can order online, but you’re still going to have to go to a store to pickup and complete the background check

Got any friends that own firearms? People that you know that own some, probably own more than you think. Ask a friend to sell you one. Look for local owners that also might sell them. Its easier than an in store purchase. Otherwise get in line.

Depends, and I'm serious, if you get an Obama holdover for the background check. I had problems and I got absolutely zero issues, except what I write on message boards. You can appeal, though. Sometimes, the backlog can be the problem

Prepare to vastly over pay if you can find one and hope like hell you can find ammo for the ones you purchase.
The silent majority is already prepared.

The handgun will have a 3 day waiting period.
You should be able to leave the store with the rifle.
Concealed permit cuts much of the red tape.

i bought another one last year...took about 5 minutes for a background check....i also bought another one on line and had to pick it up from a dealer w/a federal license locally...again background check was about 5 minutes...depending on where you live you don't need a background check for shotgun/rifle....

Good Luck, the local gun store has some, but Academy and Wallyworld was sold out weeks ago. Except Academy has some .22 LR pistols. Ammo is around, but you may not get it on the first trip.

This is not the case in the state of Louisiana.

Have you bought a gun since the country went apeshit crazy? I had to wait nearly 3 days about 6 weeks ago.

Can only speak for my area but the NICS check took less time than filling out the paperwork. I buy guns somewhat regularly, because I lose so many in boating accidents, so I've noticed there are fewer guns but it depends on the shop. There is more of an ammo shortage here. Ball ammo but no defense rounda in stock.

When you find ammo....buy it....like now.

Depends on the state. No federal 3 day hold requirements.
Some tips:
Have your correct address on your state issued ID(driver’s license).
Spell everything correctly
If you are prior military with base privileges buy on base. It’s cheaper and the generally have stuff when others don’t.
If your state issued ID does not have your correct address use motor vehicle registration or get a fishing license before hand with the correct physical address.

Boats are extremely dangerous these days. I admire your tenacity to continue your love for the water and not let the accidents get you down.

One thing I ran into that doesn’t get mentioned a lot, your address on your driver’s license has to match your current address. I bought a gun a few years ago after I had just moved and they wouldn’t release it to me until I got an updated license. DMV was already closed so had to wait until Monday.

If you really know what you want, shop on-line, order and have shipped to a local gunstore, fill out 4473, pay transfer fee, walk out with gun.

Good Lord, man! How many guns do you take boating?

Find dude in a financial tight and buy one or some from him. Everybody needs some friends in low places.
