Yeah, but you get cheap gas you don't have to pump, and there are no left turns to mess people up. (Really an odd state for an outsider to drive through, the left turn thing got me the most)

That referendum had about 23 per cent voter turn out, though...

And? I think the Alabama senate race had less.

The US won't allow Puerto Rican statehood. So all of this whining about a territory full of American citizens who are suffering is fricking moot.

That's historically low for these referendums. You stating over 90 percent want statehood is a misrepresentation of the facts.

Not really they pay no taxes yet federal support in response to these type of natural disasters are paid with taxes
No state pays enough in federal taxes to solely justify some of the emergency aid they receive, especially Florida and Louisiana.

Regardless, it is a US territory with US citizens so they are our responsibility in disasters like this.

Did Puerto Rico willingly become part of the US? No.
Who gave people in Puerto Rico Citizenship? We did.
Who gave tax breaks / amnesty to Puerto Rico? We did.
Can Puerto Rico just go its own separate way and become their own country? No.

Seems like everything you are complaining about is stuff that was decided by the US government for Puerto Rico.

You very clearly asked if we are required to help.

Yeah, you said over 90 per cent voted for it. That's certainly accurate, but considering the looooow voter turnout that's hardly the mandate you made it out to be. The truth is the island is pretty divided on the issue.

It's not relevant to the discussion of whether they should get US aid or not, but I like facts and people who represent them fairly.

So you agree that the dude's assertion that Puerto Rico consistently votes against statehood is fake arse news. Cool.

If anyone would know it's JuiceTerry. He once started like a 7 page thread laughing at everyone for believing Comey told Trump he wasn't under investigation only to find out he was the joke. Good times!

CNN arse News

Salon arse News

Both acknowledge these were non-binding referendums with historically low turnout, mostly due to boycott by anti-statehood parties. Salon even points out that the pro-statehood party is pushing statehood as way to resolve their debt crisis.

We aren't doing what we should've already done.

"We are dying, and you are killing us with the inefficiency and the bureaucracy," San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz said Friday at a news conference. She highlighted donations from companies and others, including 200,000 pounds of food donated by Goya, as a contrast to federal help.

"This is what we got last night: four pallets of water, three pallets of meals and 12 pallets of infant food — which I gave them to the people of Comerio, where people are drinking off a creek," she said. "So I am done being polite. I am done being politically correct. I am mad as hell."

There are 9500 shipping containers delivered and waiting for movement, no truck drivers available, what are we not doing?

Please explain US Federal response required?

I am not sure thats a good talking point.

Thats like arguing that because some southern states take in more federal money than they give to Uncle Sam that somehow that disqualifies them from federal aid.

PS I think Trump is doing the right thing atm.
