In her bid to join the Louisiana Public Service Commission, state Rep.Stephanie Hilferty, R-New Orleans, has received more than $137,000 in campaign contributions from people and groups connected to some of the very companies that she would be in charge of regulating if elected.
Hilferty, a Republican, is the likely frontrunner in the race to represent the Public Service Commission’s District 1, which includes parts of the Greater New Orleans area. Her opponents include Democrat Connie Norris and independent Chris Justin. Republican John Atkins is running against Democrat James Green for District 5, which represents Northern Louisiana.
The contributions come as the Public Service Commission — which regulates electric, water and gas companies, as well as common carriers — has been at the center of high-stakes decisions over the buildout of power-hungry AI data centers around the state.

I was friends with Stephanie in high school but I haven't seen her in 20 years. She's a Lakeview Republican. She will win this election, but accepting money from the utilities she will regulate isn't a good look. I'm sure they all do it.

PUC people are always former industry people for the most part everywhere

Just business as usual. Nothing to see here. Everything is fine. We can all just carry on without a care in the world.
Too much sarcasm?
Too much sarcasm?

Of course you get your news from Verite.
From their site, "Verite News is your source for New Orleans news and stories from Black, immigrant, LGBTQIA+ and other vulnerable communities."
Try harder, Karen

Well, this seems rather shitty then.

That’s SOP nationwide.

Public service and insurance commission are a complete sham. They use our tax dollars to protect the companies that they are supposed to be protecting us from.

Do you dispute the reporting or are you just triggered by the alphabet?

I thought I've read you post about your humble early life. How were you living in Lake View and going to St Mary's?

I voted for an outsider and he was elected!
Davante Lewis He's from Lake Charles. I wonder if SFP knows him.

I agree but I also want to know how much is given to ALL candidates. And perhaps the utilities are the ones who should be forbidden to give campaign contributions.

You know that SFP knows him....

What we need is a multimillionaire grocery store magnate who also comes from a family of bankers to be PSC.

I went to private schools until college. My grandparents on both sides had money. I've never lived in Lakeview, although my husband did get pulled over in LV last night with my daughter and I in the car with him. Got off with a warning.

insurance commission
I filed a complaint with the insurance commission last month. I seem to have an infinite tolerance for disappointment at the hands of our State. Or perhaps our State has an infinite capacity for disappointing its citizens.

sadly that is how most states operate. Now, there are some straight shooters individually on all commissions. Had a Georgia PSC commissioner have a meltdown when we gave him a "Lindy's SEC" magazine in 1998 with our logo placed at the bottom. Odd duck.
