United States: China's top export market, with a value of $524.7 billion in 2023.
China's second-largest export market is Hong Kong. In 2023, China exported goods worth approximately $274.52 billion to Hong Kong.
Guess where most of that goes... A city of seven million people (the size of metro los angeles) does not consume half the amount of goods of the richest country in the world... they re-export it, probably a lot to USA.

Right. Indonesia and Malaysia combine for a very significant Muslim population.
Our diplomatic ties with Singapore are a lot more important than just the economic ties. Singapore seems to understand this. It's bewildering that Americans don't and just reduce it to the size of their country.

Singapore is a great ally that is very capable relative to their size.
Poking them makes no sense.

Poking most of the people we're poking makes no sense
You might argue that it's looked at as pure stupidity by most of the world
It makes sense to attenuate our reliance on China. It doesn't make sense to shite on the countries that can help us do that.

Singapore certainly is nothing like the U.S. in how they view crime and that's obviously a huge difference.
But economically they're very relevant on the global scene, particularly for a country of their size.

And of course this is getting downvoted, likely by people that are convinced “ethnic Chinese” means lockstep with the PRC.
It’s a very complex region. When I lived there, I knew the head of security for the embassy. He reminded me that Singapore is the nice house in the middle of a bad neighborhood.
After 9/11, intel found a cache of plans and materials for attacking American targets on the island. When Mrs. Zwin and I toured the American Club before moving there, they made her delete all the pics she took of the place before we left.
Never mind the massive role the city plays in regional finance and tracking where money is coming from and going to.
Singapore is a country you very much want on your side, and they want to be on ours.

Singapore is definitely an interesting place-
Religious breakdown-
31% Buddhism, 20% no religion, 19% Christian, 15% Islam, 9% Taoism
Singapore is the only country in Asia with a AAA sovereign credit rating from all major rating agencies.
Homeownership rate is 88%, despite being the 3rd highest density country in the world.
Has 4 official languages.
One of the longest life expectancies in the world and 3rd lowest level of corruption only behind Denmark and Finland.

This is all theater. The US Navy IS what protects global shipping. We probably have a big boat or two berthed in Singapore as we speak.
