People with large families (a lot of kids) are probably the most benefited by a switch to a single payer system (aside from those with expensive chronic conditions), because such a system severs the tie between family size and health care premiums. Your liability will be based on your income, not your family size.

Knowing this, does your position change at all?

The one thing to consider also is that family size is positively correlated with income. So higher income parents are more likely to have a larger number of kids. So perhaps some could end up paying more than they currently do because their income is so high.

Just curious if our large-family posters on here have thoughts on this.

I have 6 people in my immediate family. I was on Tricare for years and had zero issues. In fact it’s great for the cost (free). Private insurance is exorbitantly expensive.

Get govt out of healthcare.

When they fix dmv or public schools then we can talk.

Besides blatant theft, what does the govt do well?

Healthcare, lulz, get the frick outta here

Not surprised that you're a fan of more pork barrel and tax-and-spend policies.

I have 4 kids.

If I had none, or if I had 10, I choose capitalism.

I have 6 total in my family so I should have to pay more for my healthy children than others because my wife and I are considered upper middle class?

Nope. I've worked in government run systems, the VA and Charity New Orleans. They are subpar in too many aspects. I'll pay my own way.

Maybe I’m missing something. But both my wife’s and my insurance plan (my company actually covers mine for me) you can either do the following:

A) Employee
B) Employee/Spouse
C) Employee/Kids
D) Family

So we do A for me since my company covers me. And C for my wife through her job. But it doesn’t matter if we have 1 kid or 8 kids our premiums and such are the same.

Family size doesn't effect premiums in any of the plans I have ever been on. The tiers have always been:

Single
Married (Couple)
Married (w/family)
Parent & Child(ren).

Never, not once have the number of children been a factor and I have 7 children.

As others have said my insurance is the same if I have 1 kid or 10 kids. As to....

Is complete BS. It is more likely that those with higher income have less kids than those with lower income. If you have a link to higher income promotes more kids I'd love to see it. I live in the higher income bracket and mingle with "those people" I know a few family's with 5 maybe 6 kids but for the most part its 2 or 3 at most. Those in the higher brackets actually think about how much they make versus how much kids cost (I know it sounds cold) but when you're looking at $150k-$200k to get the kid thru 12th grade at private school plus other expenses its not easy to have 6-10 kids.

I thought the general rule is that if you have more than 4 kids, the 4 oldest add to your monthly health premium

There you go working without proper tools again. The general rule is 1 kid or MORE is the same price. There may be some exceptions but not the general rule. I have 3 and my second was born with a heart condition (thank God its a mild condition) but we have to see the cardiologist once a year for a check up (use to be twice a year) and I pay the same as others with 2 healthy kids. Oh and this was before ACA which made my rates go up significantly. Since ACA passed, I've started my own business and pay a little over $20k per year in premiums. That's 20k just to have insurance, yep its "affordable".
