Hot off Catalonia's parliament declaring independence, the Spanish Senate just minutes ago said not so fast, approving direct rule over Catalonia.

This news is breaking the BBC's twitter feed.

I still don't know what side I'm supposed to be on. It seems like lots of my Alt-Right and Euro-sceptic buddies on Facebook are on the side of Spain, not Catalonia. That goes against my instincts, but I'm too lazy to research.

What does the #MAGA brigade on here think?

I don’t see this ending well for the Spanish national government.

Basques and Catalons will both want out and those are two of the biggest groups in the country.

Spain isn’t third world. Worst that would likely happen is some rioting.

Don't know what the maga brigade thinks but as a dabbler with the god of chaos, I hope for Catalonia to secede and an ensuing civil war. Spanish refugee ladies can stay with me. Sanctuary house.

It's a mixed bag.

If you believe in democracy and the right of self-determination (like the U.N. Charter professes to) then support Catalonia.

If you want to deny leftism a new base of operation, you have to go with Spain.

Catalonia is the richest region in Spain, I'm not sure that rioting will be the only ting. Now if the Basque decide to follow suit, it could get really ugly....they don't mind killing and blowing up things....could be a problem for Southern France as well

Technically yes but their independence referendum was a joke. If they held a legitimate independence vote like Brexit I don’t think it would pass. That’s my problem with the whole deal.

Spain has said they will take direct control of Catalonia. What is Catalonia's plan to counter this? I don't think protest will matter. They either stand up and fight or they bend over and say thank you, give me another.

What will they do? They would have to be idiots to not have a contingency for this as Spain has been telling them what they would do.

Good synopsis, thanks.

I will just say the ghosts of the Spanish Civil War have not really been laid to rest. Up until the 1970's you could get locked up just for speaking Catalan. Catalonia and Barcelona were the intellectual centers of the Republicans which were crushed by Franco with the help of his buddies Hitler and Mussolini.

I think there were real grievances in those days when Spain was a backwater not a modern country that it is today. The Spanish aristocracy and Catholic Church treated the peasantry little better than indentured serfs hence the attraction of socialism. However, the Left's leadership were of the Stalin, Soviet commissar ilk.

They were denied the freedom of a state sanctioned vote.

You have to hand it to Britain, they have the balls to actually allow a vote for Brexit and Scottish Independence.

The U.S. would never have the balls to let California vote for Independence.

There was plans for Catalonians to withdraw all their money from the banks.

The goal was it would be enough to start a run on the banks and crash the EU. I don't know if they attempted it or not. I will go with the latter though.

A civil war in a first world democracy in 2017 is laughable. I believe there will be civil discourse and possibly street violence, but no civil akin to what Syria is right now. That said, I fully support Catalonia and Basque gaining independence.

This seems analogous to the left/right split in the U.S. ex. California seceding. Sounds like the leftist already have a base of operations in Catalonia. Might be better for the rest of Spain to let them split off but I have no insight into their situation. Catalonians should be careful what they wish for if they impose full blown Socialism.
