Texas conservatives didn’t really conserve anything other than mass immigration

High school students in Texas will need to be in the top 5% of their graduating class to gain automatic admission to the University of Texas at Austin to enroll in the fall of 2026, a harder threshold to meet than the current 6%.

State law requires Texas public universities to provide automatic admission to Texas high schoolers who were in the top 10% of their graduating class. The Texas Legislature adjusted the rules for UT-Austin in 2009 to leave space for the university to accept other students, such as out-of-state students and student athletes.

The top-ranked university has since been allowed to cap its automatic admittees to 75% of each freshman class. The remaining 25% is admitted through a holistic process that considers factors such as grade point average, extracurriculars and personal essays.

quote:

The university can adjust the threshold for automatic admission every year to hit that balance. UT-Austin last lowered its automatic admission threshold from 7% to 6% in 2017, when a then-record of 51,000 applicants sought to join the university.

The most recent change in the automatic admission rate is because UT-Austin continues to see the number of applicants grow, President Jay Hartzell told the university’s Faculty Council on Monday. The university received a new record of 73,000 applications this year. UT-Austin did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Austin American-Statesman first reported the change to the automatic admission rate.

Texas lawmakers created the automatic admissions requirement in 1997 to diversify Texas’ public universities. The thinking behind the law was that Texas high schools are racially and economically divided — and if universities are required to admit the top students from high schools around the state, they’re more likely to end up with a diverse class.

Supporters of the rule say it has helped provide students with equal access to the state’s top schools, though they say it is not the only thing universities can do to increase the diversity of their student bodies.

Critics, meanwhile, argue it has been harder for students in well-resourced schools to get admitted to the state’s flagship universities.

UT auto admission program goes back to 1997

This is a picture of immigrants and students who have come to America and are enjoying one of our greatest traditions. They're literally assimilating into our culture, and that makes you mad why?

Pissed if they don't assimilate. Pissed if they do assimilate. Stout just likes to complain. It is what it is. It's particularly odd how he allows people on Twitter to form his opinions for him.

You are being disingenuous with the Harvard argument

They were discriminating mostly against East Asians. Not Indians.

I think you know this but are trying to frame it as all Asians to support your argument.

That being said, the argument isn't that Indians are too successful. The argument is that many people don't want them here because they are not a cultural fit. Outside of Muslims, no other group currently has much of a push back as Indians do and to liken that to only being because they are successful is a shallow argument at best.

What I said earlier. They out-score white people on objective college criteria.

I used to run in those circles. I've told this story before but the parents of one of my Taiwanese friends only let me hang out with him when we showed her I was better at math than he was. This was before he found out the combination to his grandpa's chest of porn

That's all of Asia

Indians have an average IQ range of 81–82

Again, you know this and there is a reason you are not separating Indians from East Asia, despite the data being easy to find.

There are a TON of dumb Asians, generally, but we don't really get many of them here in America.

That's just not true when we have gas stations abusing H1Bs for cashiers

They are hiring from the lower caste for that BS. Not bringing potential engineers

Right. Those kids are probably all in the top 5 percentile of highschool grads at a bare minimum. You're looking at future doctors and engineers

you're right. These were elite high school students. notice how the national spelling bee is all indians every year.

they got what they wanted by killing DEI. now, the son of a white farmer with a 3.5 gpa and a 29 act has to compete with the indian and asians on equal footing. Getting rid of DEI in admissions screwed him and a lot of other white kids in Texas.

For the sake of argument, let's accept this as true: Those kids aren't getting into UT if that's the case, and will work in that hotel until they die or are deported.

I have no problem saying we don't need immigrants who can only perform lower-level labor. Race is not relevant.

my kids went to a Katy ISD 6A and both managed to get into and graduate from UT Austin

we are very familiar with this story, but this is old news

in our area there are What’s App and Facebook Groups for each Katy HS dedicated to Indians helping each other on HS scheduling, online courses, standardized testing, college admissions etc

UT Austin had to lobby the Legislature to get the program rolled back from 10% to 7% to 6% to 5% because auto admission was killing their fundraising

legacy kids of rich Alums getting denied admission to UT is bad for business

TAMU and TTU have feasted on kids that are smart but cant get in to Texas

I remember you posting years ago about how competitive it was for them to get in. Glad to hear things worked out for them.

These sorts of patterns are common in higher ed. This is literally why Harvard and other schools were sued by Asians for discriminating against them.

Different types of college tiers are developing.

This development went into hypderdrive during Covid when Southern colleges became preferred to many from elsewhere for a more traditional college experience to avoid a UT-centric experience. UT is a lesser version of the elite elite schools like Harvard in this regard.

I have read the stories shared by many. Maybe one day the scandal of how they cheat and lie will break, and then the claims that they are all geniuses will be exposed.

Go ask people who work with them in tech, and they will tell you that, as a group, educated Indians are actually some of the worst employees because they can't function outside of what a textbook tells them. Of course, like anything, this isn't true across the board, as there are always going to be exceptions, but by and large, they are not great once they leave the comfort of structured schooling.
