White House chief of staff Mark Meadows on Sunday reiterated that the Trump administration and Senate Republicans won't extend a $600 boost in unemployment benefits in a forthcoming coronavirus relief package.

In an interview on ABC's "This Week," Meadows argued the original unemployment insurance measure, which has begun expiring, shouldn't be extended because it "paid people to stay home" and disincentivized unemployed people from finding work. The administration has instead pushed for an unemployment provision that would replace up to 70 percent of workers' wages.

Well you guys are getting what you want. I'm happy people are getting 70 % of their previous income.

Our country has a long way to go even despite this. My biggest problem with this effort is that it assumes that everyone is not looking for work and just collecting unemployment. While that is a concern, most people know unemployment is temporary. It was never going to last forever.

I don't believe the economy will just restart back to what it was pre-covid. Multiple industries have been gutted and jobs with them. I understand you all like to act like tough-guy conservatives, but reality isn't always black and white.

Many people lost jobs by no fault of their own. Red and Blue states have suffered from this. Why can't you all see that the damage has been bipartisan and that our solutions need to consider the possibility that economic growth will probably be slow until we reach closure with Covid and move forward.

People say that but then scream whenever you actually try to, you know, end it.

And fear not anyhow. Republicans “opening offer” was $200/wk rather than $600. But we all know they’ll give in and it’ll wind up being $600. Maybe $595 to save face.

One side is literally trying to open states and the economy back to get any kind of momentum going the other wants to keep it completely shut down for political reasons.

No, life is rarely black and white. But this $600 a week from the government was encouraging more workers to stay at home than go back to work. I have numerous clients who couldn't get their employees to come back after they reopened. I really don't blame them with state and federal unemployment checks totaling $900 a week.

I think we can all agree that $600 was far too generous, from what I understand the new HEROES act will add $200, until, states can compensate for 70% of total income

Schumer is such a bitter man. I mean, he’s just a miserable human being. He sucks the air out of my room when he is on TV.

They lost their jobs BECAUSE of state and federal efforts to destroy the economy. Jobs were lost BECAUSE of governmental interference and shut down of the United States economy. The ultimate responsibility of destroying jobs lies with our government representatives. Period!

Tens of millions of people have lost real careers.

“I saw Walmart was hiring here, you lazy bastards!”

same people:

“Jobs at Walmart and McDonalds are not careers!”

The government, in it’s infinite wisdom, shut down the employment of tens of millions of people, at NO fault of their own, with no sign of when it will reopen. It’s on the government to make it right to these people.

It looks like that is the talking point now. People are entitled to their $600 per week and Republicans are trying to take that away from them. It's like any other entitlement program. Once they get it passed, it's never coming down.

NBC today show this morning did it best. They had a two column graphic on the screen comparing the Republican proposal and Democrat proposal. This point was framed as:

"Republican plan slashes unemployeement benefits by up to $600 per week"

"Democrat plan sustains unemployeement benefits critical to food and rent"

With so many places closed, people traveling less, restaurants and bars closed people should be spending a lot less money on entertainment and leisure type activities. So 70% for doing nothing should be plenty.

In my own family, I advised a member to not seek work because this government check was more than pay. This is common and we all know it..

Of course it will. It will be a little different and a little bumpy. But supply is down and demand is up. A powerful recovery is certain.

This is far better and more effective than acting like a powerless victim pussy!

As a business attorney, I can tell you from first-hand experience that my clients have offered people their jobs back once they received PPP funds only to be told no. And it’s a good percentage of them that this has happened to.

i am no attorney, but i hope that you have advised your clients to inform these individuals in writing that their actions are job abandonment, and if they do not return to work by a certain date, they are fired.

or, i am wrong, and very little can be done........
