Did you know we actually pay Germany to post troops in their country?

True fact. It’s shameful. Up to the EU formation, the UK made Germany pay them.

Poland has been America's strongest ally on the continent for several years.

If Putin wanted to absorb the old Soviet Republics, then why didn’t he take Georgia, or annex Ukraine?

Poland wants to pay $2 billion for a base...

How much is it going to cost us to staff and maintain it?

No. Close ALL bases in Germany and France. We don’t need them there. They serve an outdated purpose.

are military bases political bargaining chips?

if it's not critical to the safety of the US/our assets then why is it open at all?

He's been working on it. Maybe you missed the Russian military actions in South Ossetia and Ukraine?

I have no idea why you keep attacking our Southern hospitality. Our opinion of the brits hasn't changed since January 8, 1815.

South Osseti

South Ossetia declared independence from Georgia in 91.

Russia could have taken Georgia in 2008, but chose not to.

Their invasion came after the Georgians attempted to take Ossetia.

Ukraine

The Russians don’t want to annex Ukraine, or take the Donbas.

This gets into a thousand years of history, and is highly
simplified, but while the people living in the Ukraine were once just Rus, they’re now somewhat split, and split on cultural and religious lines.

Western Ukraine is Catholic because it was conquered by the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 15th century. The eastern portion is Orthodox, because it remained part of Russia.

You can actually see the old border between Russia and the Commonwealth if you look at recent voting maps. Areas that were part of the commonwealth vote for Western leaning parties. Areas that were part of Russia do not.

For Russia this poses something of a problem. Western Ukraine is hostile to Russia, and its politicians have courted NATO membership for years. It’s a ten hour drive to Moscow from the Ukrainian border, and the terrain favors the attacker.

And this is why annexing the Donbas isn’t in Russia’s interest. A unified Ukraine, will alway be politically divided between east and west, and it will never join NATO. It will be a neutral buffer zone.

The next best outcome, is a frozen conflict in the Donbas. This also prevents NATO membership, and keeps Ukraine weak, although at some financial and political cost for Russia.

Cool offer (and understandable, given Poland's eastern neighbor), but I don't know that we need to expand our footprint on the Continent.

With the way Europe is spinning out of control, thanks to progressive globalist cucks... I wouldnt mind expanding our footprint there and withdraw from snackbar land.
