McCarthy was never ideal for me. You're using a straw man argument. But I knew what he was rather than being a blank slate.

And that must have been preferred by a majority of the Republican caucus otherwise they would not have elected him SOTH to begin with. If Johnson is "ideal" (your word) why did it take multiple failed candidates before the Republicans got behind him?

He's the equivalent of a successful Hail Mary touchdown pass to a walk-on freshman. Everybody thinks he's great until he drops the next pass.

He's not a career politician, so that makes him a blank slate and a walk-on freshman?

He's the type of politician we should want. You know who these career politicians are, because they are ..... career politicians.

Nope. Just trying to figure out where you are coming from with this point.

Nope. You said he wasn't, so I'm trying to figure out where THAT was coming from.

I don't know that I agree with this, but even if it is the case, we are in a better position having moved on from a guy who was doing nothing but what has been doing. There is absolutely noting in Johnson's background that would indicate he is someone who would do something more off-the-wall worse than McCarthy. So, at worst, he seems like he would just continue along the same lines. The upside is, he might actually have the gumption to shake things up and move in a better direction.

I'll take my chances. You can continue fretting if you wish.

McCarthy:

Drag arse until government is about to shut down, then capitulate and pass an omnibus bill that spends recklessly, rinse and repeat.

My point is that you, LSURussian, had never heard of Kevin McCarthy until he became speaker.
Now THAT'S funny! If it makes you feel better to believe that, then go ahead with your delusion.

Anybody who has followed the Republicans in congress knew who McCarthy was long before he was elected SOTH.

It sounds to me YOU had never heard of him and you're just projecting that lack of knowledge onto me.

My point exactly. We don't know who he is or what he will do. And after the VP, he's next in line to be President. And, yes, that is a little concerning to me. If you're completely comfortable with it, good for you!

In the meantime, I'm going to keep my fingers crossed...

the very first line in the headline about him on CNN.com is that he is a "key figure in failed efforts to overturn the 2020 election" followed by a list of hit pieces. so if they hate him, i'm sure i'll like him.

From what I see he has a measured, upstanding, generally conservative minded background. There's absolutely nothing to show him being some sort of potential wild-card that is willing to drive things off the rails. There's a few people who I know no more about than I do of him, who I would have trepidation with in this regard. He's not one. I don't know what you see otherwise - or what is missing for you, such that you think something along those lines might be a possibility.

I'm not COMPLETELY comfortable with ANYONE in Washington, of course.

I'm happy with this pick, though. I'm actually not sure who else I might possibly would have been happier with. Are there a lot of such folks for you?

I've thought Scalise would be a good SOTH. He's not flashy but he gets things done.

In spite of this board's opinion about how they want congress to work, trying to get things done in the HoR is like herding cats.

I'm not against Johnson. The jury is out if he can get things done or not.

You are telling me the House may “not get things done”?

That is my wet dream come true!
