What kind of mask are you using?
Posted on 7/17/20 at 9:12 am to BarberitosDawg
I work in what used to be called a white-collar job.
There are pictures from the 1960s at my workplace of the men who used to do what I do now. They are all wearing buttondown shirts and neckties. They wore them every day.
Neckties serve no useful purpose. They are constrictive and annoying. They are especially uncomfortable in warmer months. However, they were considered mandatory for a person in my profession in those days. But somewhere along the way, attitudes towards their necessity changed.
Masks are the new neckties. I know they serve no useful purpose, but if wearing one in the building where I do my job is required I’ll do so. Fortunately, unlike neckties in the days of old, I can take mine off in the privacy of my office, once I close my door.
I find I’m much more productive with my door closed. So that’s a plus.

i have a couple of people who are educated/smart who are doing the whole "anti mask" thing but it's usually people i'd never listen to for socio-political analysis

The same people who think mask work and force others to wear one, will be the ones that will tell us to turn off our AC to stop the spread. Then they will be the one to tell us to stop using coins and cash. Next, they will be the ones that tell you we can not vote and have to to do mail in voting. Lastly they will be the ones doing the job of politicians. Which is, divide and conqueur.
Government rather have citizens that blindly do anything instead of those who question everything due to our common sense

You know that there have been numerous scientific studies that show that masks do not serve a purpose when dealing with viruses AND can actually make it worse when wearing something like a cloth mask?
what study? the one making that argument earlier (posted in another thread) has literally 0 to do with this discussion

That’s the joke. He’s in on it.
Haha...right?
I thought the joke was obvious since I pointed out that masks are masters of time travel.

after the utter failure Trump has been since February, I just don't get the cult-like support today

I agree with this. There’s a degree of politeness that can be exhibited in wearing masks. I picked up a bunch of gaiters I can pull up over my face when I go into a store that requires a mask. It’s not my job to educate the public on the lack of efficacy of it all.
I do have to understand other people’s delusions in order to participate in society. I do not have to participate in their delusions.

usually surgical for the time being (i bought some during the initial panic anticipating the mask mandates) but i'll probably invest in something more comfortable

And it takes away from the argument that if we all did wear one, we wouldn't have spikes.
The optics will merely shift. Wearing a mask isn’t a solution in and of itself.
Hell, two months ago New Yorkers were mad people in the South were driving to the grocery story.

Please tell me what he did that failed you and what would Joe do?
Also tell me what any liberal politician did that actually brought positive change and not more division since February
I will wait as you respond with "Trump is bad"

Also, to my friend who was talking about California's mask mandate before deciding to wear the mask, remember, the mask mandate happens to coincide with the weather warming. Which is responsible if the cases decline? I am not saying I know it is the weather or the mask, but one won't be able to draw a scientific conclusion from that data without much more.

The so-called libertarian is upset that the central planner hasn't stopped a virus. What world are we in right now?

Or maybe we just know we aren't sick and contagious and if we are we stay home. Pretty simple science.

what study?
Here's one published in the CDC's own journal back in May. Metanalysis looking at 14 controlled studies.
quote:
Here, we review the evidence base on the effectiveness of nonpharmaceutical personal protective measures and environmental hygiene measures in nonhealthcare settings and discuss their potential inclusion in pandemic plans. Although mechanistic studies support the potential effect of hand hygiene or face masks, evidence from 14 randomized controlled trials of these measures did not support a substantial effect on transmission of laboratory-confirmed influenza.
There's more than one study out there. Not a whole lot in support that masks actually prevent infection. Even the WHO admits to such in their 2019 Flu pandemic document.

If you cared about yourself, others, and the economy at large, you would invest in the PPE that virologists wear. The fact that you value comfort in this fight shows your lack of commitment.
I'm sure the bandana does the job just as effectively. Those idiots are wasting the money of their grants and facilities.

We are sadly in a 2 party system , so when you attack one president you have to ask yourself what will the next person do?

That was not the question. If Trump did so bad in your opinion and the medias opinion, tell me who made the right decision since February. Also why do you think your opinion of Trump is universal?

Will be interesting to evaluate these pro-mask takes about 5 years from now when we look back at the clown world that 2020 was.
One thing I can't get past: Dr. Anthony Fauci, with 52 years of experience in infectious disease, a guy who graduated first in his class with a Doctor of Medicine at Cornell, a guy who won the following awards..
Maxwell Finland Award (1989)
Ernst Jung Prize (1995)
Lasker Award (2007)
Medal of Freedom (2008)
Robert Koch Prize (Gold, 2013)
.. a guy who has been Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for the past 46 years..
All of that expertise led him to the following conclusion in March 2020:
He cited 2 reasons why: 1) it doesn't give people the kind of protection they think it does (causing them to be careless in other areas of hygiene), and 2) it causes people to touch their face much more often.
I believe Dr. Fauci was speaking actual science in that March interview. What's happened since then is all politics.
