Lost his job from showtime. gained some respect for this man for speaking the truth. I guess Italian American privilege isnt a thing.
black boxer says this, no outrage:
Paulie said this:
then followed it with this, which calling out the double standard is what many people think got him in trouble:
Paulie refused to apologize so Showtime cut him.
black boxer says this, no outrage:
quote:
WBC lightweight champion Devin Haney saying of a potential fight with Vasiliy Lomachenko, “Listen, can’t no white boy beat me, I don’t care, on any day of the week. I fight a white boy like 10 times, I’m gonna beat him 10 times.”
Paulie said this:
quote:
“When you’re in your early twenties, you probably don’t express that very well. It’s not something that great to make racial (comments) in 2020, especially with so many racial tensions in the world and whatnot.” [...] “I think that boxing has had its course in history with certain demographics more than others, right? So like 100 years ago maybe Irish fighters were better, you know? Then you had the Jews and the Italians kind of came in — Italian-Americans anyway. And then I think the African-American fighter became the most dominant fighter in the sport in the 1970s, 80s, and even 1990s, you know? [...] “I don’t think it’s great to have the race discussion because it’s just going to coordinate division. But if Devin’s gonna be the one to bring it up — I don’t know if Devin got the memo, but it’s no longer the time of the African-American anymore in boxing. It’s the Eastern European that’s become the dominant species in boxing, so I think saying something like that can actually be very dangerous.”
then followed it with this, which calling out the double standard is what many people think got him in trouble:
quote:
“I try not to join into the race conversations because this is one of the exact examples of why I don’t believe there is racial oppression in 2020, in this century,” Malignaggi said. “I believe there has been, sure, but I don’t believe there is any racial oppression today, I believe it’s all made up and it’s exaggerated. This is exactly one of the reasons why, the fact that a black fighter can say that and not pay any price financially, but if a white fighter said that about a black fighter, he’d probably lose his TV contract, and probably TV networks wouldn’t touch him. I won’t tell you that it’s a double standard, but I’ll tell you that it does prove that the entire whole hypothesis of racial oppression is way above exaggerated in this century.”
Paulie refused to apologize so Showtime cut him.

It’s funny that Eastern Europeans are dominating in an era where it’s being marketed to Mexico more than anything

welcome to 2020 where sports and politics are one in the same. good luck being snarky though.

I don't even mind a little shite talking like this. Builds some tension and makes it that much sweeter when he gets knocked the frick out. However, we all know he won't handle a loss with any kind of grace or dignity.

I don't have outrage over it. Sounds like trash talk to me. So he needs to put up or shut up. Schedule to fight some high quality white boxers. Either he backs up what he says or not.

If Lomachenko had said this, people would be looking to run him out of boxing for being a racist. Props to Paulie for pointing it out and standing firm when people got all pissy about it.

What am I missing? The only topics I see being discussed are boxing and race as it relates to boxing. Why do you want to politicize racial discussions?

Good for Paulie. Need more people to take some risk, speak the truth and not back down.

What a weak post.
Even on the MSB you got a 1 to 19 ratio.
That’s how you know you’re sad.

The man was fired for pointing out the hypocrisy.

What people have a problem with is when athletes constantly make political statements, unsolicited.

Haney can talk all the shite he wants, but he ain’t beating Loma.

Doesn't this opponent know that racism shite like that doesn't resonate in the faintest with eastern bloc fighters???
Most of them grew up way Poorer than any American, white or black, and couldn't give 2 shits about the dude's skin color. They haven't been brainwashed into feeling like they should apologize to every camera and "journalist" about their lack of melanin.
They also know that if you frick with them enough,... You'll just disappear.
Most of these Slavic fighters have seen wars and corruption their whole lives. Some black dude talking shite just gets laughed off. Lomo is the best boxer in the world right now. And barely anyone knows who he is.
