Does anybody have the goop on why some on the Metro Council want to replace Parish Attorney LeeAnne Batson? and why she resigned so easily? I am disappointed that she gave up too easy. Public support was behind her, and now that she resigned we may not get answers as to why Council Rep. Lamont Cole wanted to fire her. Does anybody have the inside goop?

apparently, she came down on parish attorneys working on criminal cases involving BRPD, which really hurt one of her employees (who happens to be politically connected). so his friend pushes to get Baston fired and replaced by...the disgruntled employee who wants to double dip

JR Ball has a new article in Business Report that explains why LeeAnne Batson had no chance of keeping her job. What does it say? I do not have subscription and too cheap to pay for one.

Apparently one of her deputies was told to leave because he kept lying and couldn’t follow the rules laid down.

The deputy, a black attorney, kept taking on criminal defendants arrested in EBR, meaning a conflict of interest, lied about doing so and discharging those clients, and refused to track the hours he spent doing private practice.

He submitted his resignation in November, with mid-January as a final date, which coincided with Cole’s push to dump Batson.

Baton Rouge just lost a good Parish Attorney. I have been observing Metro Council meetings for years now, and she always gave sound legal advice to MC at meetings, even before she was appointed PA she gave good advice. And quite frankly I was surprised when Mary Roper got the job over her.

1 she is the wrong color
2 she was removing incompetent political cronies and replacing them with people who know how to do the job
3 she wanted to remove corruption and cronyism (a high crime)

This. I also share the OP's disappointment that she didn't even try to fight this, so as to pull all this garbage into the light.

Screw the Mayor for not stepping in to head off another racially based, terrible decision.

Why was it a conflict of interest if it involved criminal cases?

The Parish Attorney's office does not prosecute criminal cases.

Because she is competent and does her best to keep the morons on the metro council from getting the city sued.

Perhaps he was using his position to get referrals somehow?

I believe the Parish Attorneys office represents the City of Baton Rouge police department.

On civil cases, not criminal.

1. She’s white.

2. She was doing full-time work for part-time pay. They want somebody who will flip that.

it can get complicated really quickly

if any of those criminal cases involved allegations of wrongdoing by BRPD, then there would be a clear conflict

understanding of policies and procedures of BRPD could come into play. he'd effectively be on both sides of that issue
