Perhaps you didn't read or watch the news reports about the incident until it predictably started to unravel. Or maybe you didn't see Democratic presidential candidates immediately come out and "coincidentally" refer to it as a modern-day lynching.
So to answer your question, No. Rational people didn't believe this BS from the beginning. But the media desperately wanted it to be true and held on hope that it was true until the bitter end.
If Trump doesn't have his twitter, the media just lets this story quietly, and disappointingly, fade away. This response is a big frick you to the media in support of the people who support the POTUS and were AS A WHOLE indirectly and FALSELY blamed for this bullshite.
