That’s is a meaningful stat but what percentage of blacks at that time were not slaves? That also seems pretty important.

4.4 million black people in the US in 1860
3.9 million slaves
90,900 households
The percentage of black people that owned slaves is very misleading. Most free black people that owned slaves bought their family out of slavery. Sometimes this happened because slaves or former slaves could not leave the state. Technically they were slaves, but were not treated as slaves by the people that bought them.
Free black land owners bought slaves for their friends that didn’t own land. They were technically slaves too. Only black landowners could buy slaves.
There was a rise in black people owning slaves each year until slavery was abolished. The reason was to set them free and not enslave them

Right before the Civil War in the last census in 1860 3000 black families owned 20000 slaves. While most of them were to free them there were still close to half that number that were slaves.

Nice story......but no truth to this statement. It would make a great Hallmark movie.

On one side I had a 3rd great-grandfather die in a confederate prison camp. On the other I had a 2nd great grandfather who served in the 3rd West Virginia Cavalry. I've found no record of slave holders while doing my ancestry. I don't owe anyone shite for slavery.

And...
Not all of them were white.
Not all of them were white.

I declare that:
My great-great-great grandfather, Spencer Montgomery Bankston, was a slave owner.
My great-great grandfather, Samuel James Talley, was a slave owner.
I, personally, have never owned slaves.
Come get your "reparations."

And two of the largest slave owners were Black.

Seems like blacks should pay reparations to the descendants of the almost 400,000 Union soldiers that died in the Civil War.

Slave owners were some of the most reprehensible people that ever lived. Look what they stuck us with.
Lazy pieces of shite who wanted to live a gilded existence off the labor of others held together with violence against innocent people.

New Iberia had a majority Cajun population back then. But the only big plantation with slaves was owned by an English guy.

Ahistorical again.
You take a few examples and try to claim that for the whole population.
In the days before dishwashers and vacuums people had house servants.
When people wanted to make their family and friends free, they legally emancipation them.
No one kept technically enslaved people.
Washington freed his slaves, Lee freed his slaves, there was a solid legal way to do this.
Face it, every one of those black slave owners was exactly as evil as the white ones when it comes to slavery.
Whoever told you such trash deals in lies.

One of the greatest ironies is that black people always bitch about slavery but the former slave trade benefits modern blacks and hurts modern whites.
Because of the slave trade, millions of blacks live in the USA instead of some west African shithole and have a much higher standard of living and opportunities because of it.
Because of the slave trade, white people in the USA have to deal with shitty black culture that’s generally low IQ and more prone to criminal and disruptive behavior.

25-30% of families is pretty significant.
I’ve researched this, around 4-5% (at best) of southerners owned slaves.
What historians have done is rewrite the definition of “owning slaves” to pump up the percentage.
If the slaveowner was the husband, for example, he was married and had six kids, they’ve interpreted that to mean the seven additional people (wife and six kids) were also slaveowners, thus increasing the percentage of southerners they claim owned slaves.

As I see it - the biggest sin of the confederacy was this - the fact that the children of slaves were destined to be slaves.
While not the only slave-holding society to engage in this, it is the one thing that I can think of that bears any real societal 'sin' - a population cannot be expected to instantly overthrow centuries of culture.
You could blame the North for encouraging slavery by continuing to purchase the southern cotton for their cotton mills - THEY should have said 'hell no - we will not fund the continued sin of slavery' - but they didn't - they were also disabled by human deficiency.
The REAL blame for slavery in the New World belongs on the heads of the AFRICAN countries where it began. THEY are the ones who took human beings out of their freedom and made SLAVEs of them. The "Atlantic Slave Trade" was merely a cog in the business cycle.
And for those who inflate their egos by deriding how horrible our ancestors were for enabling slavery to take hold and for not eliminating it immediately, I think of those people centuries from now who look back on THOSE egos when they reflect on:
"Can you imagine a society that would cut the dicks off healthy children just so they could have a bragging point in their societal chats?"
Posterity will not treat those idiots warmly - they will be considered the real progenitors of a real dystopia. They have NO rationale other than 'muh feelings' and 'wanting to fit in'.

And yet, no black person will ever admit that fact that had it not been for their ancestors being enslaved, they would not be alive and enjoy the benefits of living in the greatest country on Earth.

Bruh, they would all be Kangz and Qweengs living in Wakanda where they would not be shooting at each other and yankin out dey weaves when disrespected.

Any black born from a slave ancestry born in the last half century ought to that God for slavery having existed and that it no longer is a threat.
Just like I thank GOD for the "highland clearances" in Scotland - because if not for them, or some other catastrophe, I'd currently still be the old world dealing with the problems they are creating today.
Now my ancestors who were forced into 'indentured servitude' were not at all so thankful for losing their homes in Scotland.
And I am not at all equating indentured servitude to slavery - but only to point out that each segment of society has its own history that it could dwell on if that is how they want to deflect their own failures onto someone else.

Woah woah my friend, lets not dismiss that idea out of hand.
We should try it, lets build a big Chinese style city in the middle of Africa and move all those Kangz Qweens and other indolents there where they can attempt to rule themselves far away from us...
Im sure when we check in 50 years they will have Wakanda level succes...

quote:True, but with caveats:
Only 1.5% of Americans owned slaves at the height of chattel slavery.
1) A multimember household would only list one slaveowner. So the per person extrapolation is a misnomer. Around 5% of households owned slaves.
2) The vast majority of slaves were held in the south. So ~20% of southern households owned slaves.
3) 100% of the founding states ratified the US Constitution including slavery.
Those are the simple facts.
However:
quote:Reparations were paid in blood in the form of 600 - 700K lives lost, citizenship in a nation offering infinitely better opportunity than those of Black ancestral origin, followed by a decade of Southern Reparations.
Americans today asking/demanding and believing they are entitled to some form of reparations
Perhaps reparations offered in the form of transferred citizenship and relocation of domicile to ancestral lands would garner a more serious approach to the issue by those screaming for awards based on their ancestors' ancestors' ancestors' ancestors' hardships?
