The article has some good follow-up information on a few of the people affected by the tragedy.

quote:

On April 20, 1999, two teenage gunmen kill 13 people in a shooting spree at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, south of Denver. At approximately 11:19 a.m., Dylan Klebold, 17, and Eric Harris, 18, dressed in trench coats, began shooting students outside the school before moving inside to continue their rampage. By 11:35 a.m., Klebold and Harris had killed 12 fellow students and a teacher and wounded another 23 people. Shortly after noon, the two teens turned their guns on themselves and died by suicide.

The crime prompted a national debate on gun control and school safety, as well as a major investigation to determine what motivated the teen gunmen. In the days immediately following the shootings, it was speculated that Klebold and Harris purposely chose jocks, minorities and Christians as their victims.

It was initially reported that one student, Cassie Bernall, was allegedly asked by one of the gunmen if she believed in God. When Bernall said, “Yes,” she was shot to death. Her parents later wrote a book titled She Said Yes, honoring their martyred daughter. Apparently, however, the question was not actually posed to Bernall but to another student who had already been wounded by a gunshot. When that victim replied, “Yes,” the shooter walked away.

Subsequent investigations also determined that Harris and Klebold chose their victims randomly. Their original plan was for two propane bombs to explode in the school’s cafeteria, potentially killing hundreds of people and forcing the survivors outside and into the gunmen’s line of fire. When the bombs didn’t work, Harris and Klebold went into the school to carry out their murderous rampage.

There was speculation that Harris and Klebold committed the killings because they were members of a group of social outcasts called the “Trenchcoat Mafia” that was fascinated by Goth culture. Violent video games and music were also blamed for influencing the killers. However, none of these theories was ever proven.

Columbine High School reopened in the fall of 1999, but the massacre left a scar on the Littleton community. Mark Manes, the young man who sold a gun to Harris and bought him 100 rounds of ammunition the day before the murders, was sentenced to six years in prison. Carla Hochhalter, the mother of a student who was paralyzed in the attack, killed herself at a gun shop. Several other parents filed suit against the school and the police. Even Dylan Klebold’s parents filed notice of their intent to sue, claiming that police should have stopped Harris earlier. And when a carpenter from Chicago erected 15 crosses in a local park on behalf of everyone who died on April 20, parents of the victims tore down the two in memory of Klebold and Harris.

The shootings at Columbine were among the worst school shootings in U.S. history until April 16, 2007, when 32 people were shot and many others wounded by a student gunman on the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, Virginia. Subsequent school shootings, including in Newtown, Connecticut in December 2012 and in Parkland, Florida in February 2018, continued to pain the nation. A March 2018 analysis by the Washington Post found that since the Columbine shootings in 1999, there have been 10 school shootings each year on average in the United States.

That was a crazy day. I remember being in 6th grade and the teacher putting the tv on to see what happened. Everybody couldn’t believe it.

My wife attended Columbine during this time. She was on a field trip that day and thankfully wasn’t there.

Is it true that this guy was one of the survivors?

Idk if it's ever been 100% confirmed, but if you look at the infamous class photo of Columbine (the one where they're pretending to point "shoot" the camera) there's a student in the crowd who looks just like that guy. Making the same face and everything.

I worked for Motorola and was driving back from the Springs when the alert came on KOA and then spent part of that Day in the Jefferson County comms center and elsewhere listening to the chaos. That event effected me more than any other event short of 9/11. I think I was irrationally sad for 3/4 months. I went down the rabbit hole.

RIP.

I read Years ago that one set of parents never went into one of the shooter's room (I forget which one) because he demanded they don't.

They of course didn't. After the shooting, when the cops went into his room. Everything about that space screamed bloody murder. His darkness was all over the walls in drawings, posters and whatever else. Writings and just crazy shite everywhere.

The lesson, if not obvious is to never, ever allow your kids to believe they have a right to privacy and always remind them that any privacy they are granted is a privilege. Under your roof, they're entitled to nothing.

Had the parents not respected this false "right to privacy" they believed their son had or at least pulled their head from the sand long enough to see things as they were, this may have been prevented.

People who do this, will always reveal their darkness (one way or another) to someone who could possibly stop it and it won't be a subtle or cryptic revelation.

They may not come out and say I want to commit mass murder but their behavior and thoughts will reveal it. They'll let you know. People just have to be willing to see it. In their own way, they'll beg you to stop them.

....when we allowed the liberals to purge God from our culture, this is what resulted. The random shooting of innocent men, women, and children continues to this day. We have arrived at the point where we worship the druggies and thugs. Even creating statues of them. Then America throws the innocent police officer (Derek Chauvin) in jail. His crime? He was only doing his job.

Instead of demanding a national day of prayer to ask Almighty God to heal us, the voters elected a crook. Yep, 81 million votes, they tell us. A crook with a son who fraternizes with whores, buys his cocaine from Russian drugs dealers, and consorts with our enemy. Even as I write this post, authorities are rummaging through his laptop.

Eventually, this will catch up to America. It won't be pretty.

God please be merciful to us.

And I thought the OP's topic was a frickin' downer.

I graduated from high school only two years before Columbine. In all of my years in school, the thought that something like a mass shooting at school never crossed my mind, and as far as I know, anyone else's mind, either. Unfortunately, since 1999, it is a reality a whole generation of kids have had to think about. I know school shootings had happened on occasion prior to 1999, but Columbine seems to be one of those watershed moments for our society.

If that bomb would’ve gone off giving them a chance to use all their ammo, casualties would’ve been in the hundreds.
I’m glad authorities made their library suicide picture public, but they deserved much worse. Cowards!

One of my best friends was in the building during the Pearl shooting.

There’s a reason the media doesn’t talk about that one. The assistant principal grabbed his pistol and stopped it quickly.

I had a customer in the late '90's that worked for Conoco that went to high school with the Luby's shooter in Killeen and worked with Dylan Klebold's father.

Lived in the area & volunteered for the Columbine Memorial project.

Perfect storm of events culminated in this absolute tragedy. Meeting one of the key player survivors whose life was permanently turned upside down was heart stopping.

On par with today, it's amazing how the media capitalized on the oppty & distorted truths to fit narratives.

It's more likely that the internet just hadn't taken hold of things yet, as the historical records shows hundreds of school shootings prior to Columbine (including 8 just in the 16 months prior to Columbine - 2 of which killed at least 4 students).

Here's one that happened less than a year prior - looks like the victims just lucked out in that more didn't die; but several were killed and 25 wounded.
