OK, that was a bit rhetorical, but an OSU player tweeted that they should do so, since Big 10 cancelled the season. Set aside a SCHOOL playing in another conference and look at PLAYERS.

My questions

Do universities breach their obligations to their athletes by cancelling the season and thus costing many athletes a year of their (very short) future lucrative careers in pro sports?

Should those athletes be released from any limitations on moving freely to other schools by virtue of that breach?

Should the schools who continue playing be free to enroll players from non-playing schools, without penalty?

I say “yes” to all three questions.

They'll have to do it on an individual basis, since it was Pamala Karlan-type left-wing nutjobs at Ohio State who chose to opt out of the season. It's not like they were forced to make that foolish decision.

I'd trade Missouri for tOSU only under the condition that they had to play Alabama as their "fixed" eastern opponent every year.

That said, to your point, it certainly brings up anti-trust considerations. Where else can the players go to play if the universities lock them out?

Schools part of conferences that cancel should be able to join the independent conference. Until those conferences realize they made a terrible decision and come running back

and what about the NFL?

Is there not an implicit contract between the NCAA and student athletes, to the effect that the NCAA will prepare them for NFL opportunities?

Has that implicit contract been breached, allowing athletes to make a run at the NFL this Fall as undrafted free agents?

Every athlete that plays in a conference that cancels its season should be eligible to declare for the 2021 draft (regardless of age/class) and should be allowed to come back if they aren't drafted.

Based on prior NCAA actions, I’d say that allowing free transfer from a program would be a possibility.

Players at schools whose programs have shut down, even temporarily, have always been raided by other schools. SMU was the most famous example but UAB, when the U of Alabama trustees fricked the program, was another case.

Not for the vast majority of NCAA football players

If the school provides the scholarship which it agreed to provide, probably not. But that would be a novel argument for an athlete who may want to challenge the rules and go professional early.

I would agree they should; the NCAA allows players to transfer without penalty if a school abolishes a sport or is placed on probation in it.

Up to the limit of the number of scholarships in that sport, yes to those players who would be awarded one. Otherwise they can be walk-ons and should be allowed to play if otherwise eligible.

The universities would counter that they are providing the scholarships IAW the letter of intent. BUT your point is valid since the NCAA P5 programs are essentially the ''de facto'' NFL minor league system.

Just add them to Arkansas’ schedule. Neither team would notice.

What is in the scholarship papers they sign? I would think as long as they are allowed to continue going to class and receive free room and board, the school is holding up their end of the deal

I also don't think the NCAA has any obligation to prepare players for the NFL. That's on the coaches at each school.

Why should they do so whenever they voted against the playing and were a part of the cancellation of the Big 10?

That this is even a question is part of the problem. College sports shouldn't be looked at as a feeding ground for the pros. The primary reason for attending college should always be for an education, being able to "graduate" from college sports to the pros should be seen only as a bonus. Having gotten away from that (as well as the inclusion of social justice curricula) is a big part of why college degrees are becoming worth less and less with each passing year.
