Why can't we escort ships through the strait?
I don't understand how Iran can completely regulate passage.
I don't know. If their military capability has been diminished to the extent that we have been told, then we should be able to, right?

Imagine if we had actually fully exploited the oil and LNG in Alaska. It’s an easy trip from there to Asia. It would have made the Strait less relevant, except perhaps to the Europeans.

Uh they have oil prices by the balls. We get next to nothing from that area.
Until this significantly changes, they have us by the balls.

They don’t have us by the balls. They are just making things uncomfortably.
But that chart of crude prices would’ve a lot worse if we punted this for the future when they have nukes and were able to cause real problems.

Also they've laid mines. They're not actually controlling it by ship but the threat of violence creates the control in effect.
The mines story is obviously bullshite since some tankers are in fact being able to go through the strait with irans approval.

The 50+ year old LNG plant in Alaska is about to be demolished.
It will be replaced with new larger plant.

IRAN HARDLINERS PUSH NUCLEAR BOMB DEBATE
Iranian hardliners are increasingly vocal about pursuing a nuclear bomb amid ongoing U.S.-Israeli attacks, sources say. With the Revolutionary Guards now dominant after the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, calls to abandon the NPT and consider nuclear weapons are gaining traction.
While Iran has not officially changed its nuclear policy and still cites Khamenei’s fatwa against bombs, state media and hardline politicians are publicly questioning the ban. Analysts say Iran’s goal has long been “threshold state” capability, but the war may push hawkish voices toward advocating a bomb.
The pace and feasibility of building a weapon remain uncertain due to recent airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear and ballistic facilities.

Who on Iran’s side is approving shipping passage and why are they still alive?

Maybe they can remotely turn the mines on/off, so allow some ships to pass through?
OK, AI says:
quote:
Yes, Iran possesses the capability to remotely control certain advanced naval mines, enabling them to activate, deactivate, or target specific ship signatures in strategic areas like the Strait of Hormuz . These sophisticated "influence" mines can be set to ignore friendly vessels or safe-passage ships while triggering for designated targets.

Feels like Trump should have waited on this until after the midterms. I'm afraid he'll be dealing with a Democratic House and Senate now next year as a result. Thomas and Alito need to retire this summer or else hunker down for 4-8 years until we have a Republican Senate and President again.

It's too risky. Even though their capabilities have been diminished Iran still is able to fire missiles and seems to still have plenty of drones. If they get lucky and hit or even manage to sink 1 naval ship it wouldn't be good. Can you imagine the shite storm liberals would create if that happened? Not worth it.

They use an alternate route that’s been approved by Iran.
Left is traditional route. Right is alternate.
