Most people I know are having a lot of trouble finding plumbers, electricians, and general construction folks (siding, roofing, etc) that have the time to get to the homeowner...
There is definitely a vacuum in many places right now...
It's like this in every category of construction. Back in the 80's many owners saw the value in craft training on large construction projects. In fact, they would even pay for it.
In the 90's, owners changed their contract modeling to more fixed fee work and less negotiated work. As a result, contractors cannot afford to include any craft training and remain competitive. To compound the problem, the last generation of true blue collar workers have finally retired and taken their skills with them, leaving one of the largest gaps in talent in any industry.
This comes back to owners...period. Chasing cheap, bottom dollar bids is coming home to roost.

The problem is not an income issue for most its a spending issue. If you make $18/hr you shouldnt be driving brand new cars with new phones, and eating out.
Hence people talking about a "living wage", what you propose is a never ending, unceasing rat race just to maintain basic needs for survival. The American Dream is dead, the experiment is over. Thanks, Boomers and crony capitalists.

Do you work in construction and complaining about the pay?
Also, it doesn't surprise me that you are grifting on an employer...

So, you are breaking the law AND doing what you were complaining that the Hispanics were doing in your area...
Tell me, are you paying your Hondurans a "living wage"?

I'm a construction manager. I'm efficient so I have some down time.

So, you are one of the people that this young person is complaining about sucking $50+ off of the $150 labor rate being charged?
Posted on 9/16/22 at 10:02 am to The Maj
Yes, I pay the lead Carpenter $25 an hour. No experience I start them at $15 an hour.

But that is not a living wage, why are you such a terrible person?
Also, you should be ashamed of yourself for taking advantage of our brown brothers like that...

It's the only way to compete right now. The Mexican crews have much lower overhead cost and they pack about 8 to 10 people in a two bedroom apartment. They are driving down wages, hard to be competitive when you're up against that. They are not the solution, they are the problem flooding this country.

Everything that I’ve seen and read said that this possible strike had nothing to do with money. The RR companies have downsized their workforce significantly over the last few years. This has resulted in the remaining workers to be more or less on call 24/7. Very little guaranteed off time to make plans or plan functions with family. No set schedule and long hours with lots of overtime.
I’ve seen no bitching about money. Although if offered I’m absolutely sure they’ll take it. What fool wouldn’t? But more money won’t fix this problem.
More workers will. The companies flatly are sticking to this point. This will not go away. Biden’s solution will be temporary.
The workers want congress to get involved. But they’re already pretty polarized on everything else. So I guess we’ll see.

There is not enough labor... I had to wait 4 weeks to have some trees removed from one of my rental properties in FL... Regulation has some to do with the delay... The rest, finding a contractor that was available...
In reality, there’s plenty of labor potential, the problem is there’s tens of millions of Americans who refuse to work.

If you’re a business owner how much have you raised the price for your services or goods?
We own a retail sales business. All of our costs have gone up across the board; labor, office supplies, inventory, etc, etc, etc. Our customers end up paying for these increases.
Inflation is a tax paid for by consumers. Businesses like mine simply collect those taxes for the gov't.

You are right about the Americans that don't want to work. But think about it, if the government is going to take care of them why work? Why make $12 an hour and struggle to even buy the most basic necessities? I don't know about it in other states, but in Louisiana there's zero incentive to do anything positive.

It wasn’t always this hard to work to be a rail worker
During a recent workday, a longtime Norfolk Southern engineer heard from his boss that anyone who could recommend a new employee would receive a $5,000 bonus.
“I said to my boss, ‘The only people I hate enough to get jobs in the railroad already work here,’” said the engineer, who requested his name be withheld from publication for fear of retribution. “He just looked at me and walked away.”
Don't be surprised if the union members reject this contract. It's not a done deal.

Serious question. What do you think is an appropriate hourly wage for a freight engineer?

Plumbing companies are still paying their top guys $25 an hour, while charging customers $150 an hour.
And the rest of that $125 an hour goes to taxes, vehicles, fuel, paying support staff, insurance, etc.
So you're saying plumbing companies just do business out of kindness and make no profit?
