Even more evidence the left wing media is trying to normalize pedophilia...

Convicted of Sex Crimes, but With No Victims

An online sting operation to catch child predators snared hundreds of men. What were they really guilty of?

Trying to murder someone is a crime, even if not successful.

Conspiracy to commit a crime isn’t a crime?

Remember this is the same publication that put their IT department on the case instead of calling the police when child porn was found on Paul Krugman's computer.

Not only should the pedophiles be hanged, but the NYT should be burned out for suggesting this.

Mens rea.

The perp was under the impression they did exist.

I suspect most of them are guilty and deserve prosecution.

But I was involved in a case that was ancillary to a sting like this years ago. Holy shite, the stuff coming from the "girl" (who was purporting to be like 16 or so I think) was insane. It didn't truly change my perception of the perp (not a pedophile, but certainly a dirtbag). But it did change my perception of the validity of these stings. In short, the police officer impersonating the girl was absolutely filthy and very aggressive.

Given the opportunity, a high percentage of these offenders would carry out the act in person.

I have to admit, I thought I was going to be disgusted, but they do make a pretty compelling argument for how these sting operations may be doing more harm than good.

The first guy was caught dead to rights though. If he was worried about the chick being 13, and truly didn't believe it, then he should have pushed harder for further identification before meeting her in person.

If I would try to imagine what a pedophile would look like, this guy is it.

I'm disgusted by pedophiles and I'm glad programs like this exist but there are a lot of mentally fricked up/weird depressed people out there that can be convinced to do anything for the feelings of being accepted by someone, anyone. So I question some of the tactics they use. This guy wasn't looking for underage sex and seemed completely surprised by the notion. He mentioned multiple times that he would be interested in other stuff when he found out that she was not of compatible sexual age but knew they had non-sexual interests in common. That's still really frickin' weird and this guy needs help, but then it's the "kid" who steers the conversation towards sexual stuff again. Are we really doing society a service by trying to persuade mentally fricked up guys into underage situations and then capturing them?

Yes. We need to differentiate between pedophilia and guys who make moves on teenagers. I'm not suggesting the latter become lawful, but it's not in the same category and not motivated by the same things.

Those dudes lack morals/decency, but they're probably not attracted to children. They're attracted to women, and a 16 year old can certainly resemble a woman (to the detriment of shady men and fathers alike). That's tough to discuss because it sounds pervy, but it's true, and I think lumping it all in together has negative ramifications for protecting children from genuine predators.

I have no issue with police imitating 16 year olds on chat/whatever to see who bites and prosecuting guys who take it to actionable levels, but I do have an issue with law enforcement leading/persuading the action in those stings.

sometimes 16 year old girls are filthy and aggressive. It’s the adults who have the responsibility to know what they can and can’t do, not underage children

Well yes. But when it comes to law enforcement priorities, I would think we'd devote our resources to catching the groomer-type, not the weak-willed type who can be convinced to have sex with a bold and aggressive teen.

That rests on the assumption that statutory rape is a thing primarily because of the imbalance in motivation/authority/power/intellect. If a bold teen gets a guy to have sex with her and we prosecute him, are we doing a public service? The only argument I see is that we're sending the message (you can't do that), but it gets pretty circular, no?
