New SAT scoring structure is a backdoor attempt at racial quotas: interesting data here

Advocates of this change claim that it is not about race. That is a fiction. In fact, the SAT adversity score is simply the latest response on the part of mainstream institutions to the seeming intractability of the racial academic-achievement gap. If that gap did not exist, the entire discourse about “diversity” would evaporate overnight. The average white score on the SAT (1,123 out of a possible 1,600) is 177 points higher than the average black score (946), approximately a standard deviation of difference. This gap has persisted for decades. It is not explained by socioeconomic disparities. The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education reported in 1998 that white students from households with incomes of $10,000 or less score better on the SAT than black students from households with incomes of $80,000 to $100,000. In 2015, students with family incomes of $20,000 or less (a category that includes all racial groups) scored higher on average on the math SAT than the average math score of black students from all income levels. The University of California has calculated that race predicts SAT scores better than class.

Asian students outscore white students on the SAT by 100 points; they outscore blacks by 277 points. It is not Asian families’ economic capital that vaults them to the top of the academic totem pole; it is their emphasis on scholarly effort and self-discipline. Every year in New York City, Asian elementary school students vastly outperform every other racial and ethnic group on the admissions test for the city’s competitive public high schools, even though a disproportionate number of them come from poor immigrant families.
quote:
Colleges pay lip service to socioeconomic diversity, but that concept is inevitably a surrogate for race. Colleges have repeatedly rejected admissions schemes that purport to substitute socioeconomic preferences for racial preferences, on the ground that those socioeconomic schemes do not yield enough “underrepresented minorities.”
quote:
The solution to the academic achievement gap lies in cultural change, not in yet another attack on a meritocratic standard. Black parents need to focus as relentlessly as Asian parents on their children’s school attendance and performance. They need to monitor homework completion and grades. Academic achievement must no longer be stigmatized as “acting white.” And a far greater percentage of black children must be raised by both their mother and their father, to ensure the socialization that prevents classrooms from turning into scenes of chaos and violence.

TL/DR: the SAT is adding this score not because kids from lower socioeconomic backgrounds score worse (not true), but because black students are more likely to come from those backgrounds

I hope colleges put a moratorium on accepting middle class white kids.

My problems with it:
1) Lack of transparency
2) Putting an asterisk on high achievers
3) Colleges already can, and do, try to identify students they feel deserve a closer look than the raw numbers would indicate. Just let them do their thing- they most likely have identified models appropriate for their applicant pool.
4) From what we are allowed to know, it doesn't line up well with actual advantages and disadvantages. A black kid can get dinged for living in a two-parent home or for living in a poor neighborhood in a rich ZIP code (Hollygrove and Audubon Place are both 70118).

Why does every employment application ask you in the end what your race is?

EO numbers.
Its dumb IMO, the best person should get the job, just like tests should not involve personal information.

It's definitely about race. The last stat I saw had white students from families earning under $30K a year scoring higher on the SAT than black students from families earning over $100K a year.

A black guy wrote a critical OP-ed in the New York Times. He's gonna get his card pulled like Russell Wilson.

Btw, for further reading on this topic I highly recommend Heather McDonald's book "The Diversity Delusion"

This reminds me of a stupid employment test my state started doing in the 80's called GATB. If a white guy, black guy and hispanic guy took the test and answered every question exactly the same the black guy would get a 90, the hispanic somewhere in the 80's and the white guy would get around a 75.
If you wanted to be sure the people getting hired are not the best qualified it's a great system. Yet another example of the damage progressive left ideology does to our society and they are proud of it.

Question for freshmen who got in for reasons other than their actual abilities: "How does it feel to be the dumbest kid in the class?"

Dems don't want to have a real conversation about the black race, they want to have these pretend conversations about diversity and socioeconomic backgrounds, etc...
The real conversation is what we've experienced in our life and what we see everyday on the morning news, theft, murder, carjackings (which is called sliders now ) . Having a father in the home would be a huge start for the black community.

I had an Asian roommate in College - straight from China (exchange student) and all he fricking did was study.
I told him to go out meet people, go to the bars, football games, etc.
"I must study to make family proud."
He would go to bed at 8pm and get up at 5am and start studying again.
He even complained that I would come back to the dorm late at night drunk and made too much noise and that I should go to bed when he went to bed as it was the most sensible time.
He got nothing out of the overall College experience and had no friends - but he sure as hell got perfect grades.

Why can't this be more obvious.

I still remember the article someone posted on here a year ago about medical school enrollment. Basically it showed that if it was done strictly on merit only White and Asian people would be in Medical School.

Now we need a new test that we can trust.
