This is why you do not pay people more in unemployment

quote:

A Garden District coffee shop is being picketed by a group of fired baristas and worker advocates over pay and working conditions, a labor dispute that reflects growing tensions between New Orleans employees and business owners amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Charlotte Wilcox, one of the five baristas fired from Still Perkin' this week, said that the coffee shop's owners asked them to return to work on May 16. But she and five of the coffee shop's other nine employees refused to come back until the owners agreed to a list of demands that included paying $15 an hour in hazard pay, compared to their usual pay of between $8.25 and $8.50 an hour, as well as instituting paid family and medical leave.

quote:

The coffee shop's co-owners, a group that includes an LSU professor of epidemiology, said they've complied with all government health codes. They said they've offered slight wage increases but maintain that they're in a difficult position, with rent piling up from two months of being closed and worries that they'll still see few customers during the first phase of re-opening.

quote:

"The bosses are basically giving us two options," Maloney said about businesses across New Orleans. "They're saying you can come in under these current conditions and we're not going to answer any of the safety questions you have, or we're going to get you kicked off unemployment and fire you."

I don't see what's wrong with this comment? If you don't want to work their you're entitled to work elsewhere.

Sounds like they don’t accept the terms of employment. That’s their right, just as it’s his right to look for other who will.

Sounds good... You're offered your job back, you refuse, you don't get a free ride

With all the CC's in LA I'm sure it won't be hard to find 5 replacements

I mean the baristas, aka coffee preparers (which of course is a highly-skilled job taking years of education and practice), have all the leverage here.

Where, oh where, will the owners find replacement workers? Might have to ramp up the H1Bs to fill those jobs.

That's the issue, they are getting more money from unemployment than if they return to work.

That is the wife. The husband is a lawyer. And yes, you are probably correct that both vote Democrat.

I'm my own barista. I'm ok with paying myself the $15, but no way am I giving myself family and medical leave.

Option one - I can comply with your requests.

Option two - I can give you the finger

*flips bird*

and hire new baristas.

Put a help wanted ad on Monster, they'll be bombarded with responses.

If the business isn’t willing to meet safety standards the employees should be able to remain on unemployment

If they are meeting state safety standards, work can resume and anyone not returning gets reported to LA Workforce Commission for a refusal to return.

The worker can’t arbitrarily choose safety standards.
