A new law signed on Friday will allow Californians to legally jaywalk without being ticketed.

Pedestrians can now cross the street outside of an intersection without breaking the law as long as it is safe to do so.

The bill, AB 2147, also known as The Freedom To Walk Act, was introduced by Assembly member Phil Ting and signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom.

The law will take effect on Jan. 1, 2023.

“It should not be a criminal offense to safely cross the street,” said Ting. “When expensive tickets and unnecessary confrontations with police impact only certain communities, it’s time to reconsider how we use our law enforcement resources and whether our jaywalking laws really do protect pedestrians.”

Under the new law, officers can cite a jaywalker “only when a reasonably careful person would realize there is an immediate danger of a collision.”

Proponents say the law is a win in decriminalizing jaywalking, for which tickets are disproportionately given to low-income individuals or minorities who typically cannot afford to pay the tickets.

“No longer will law enforcement be able to stop people who are safely crossing the street and burden them with citations and heaps of debt,” said Zal Shroff, senior staff attorney at the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area. “For too long, our jaywalking laws were used as a pretext to stop and harass people, especially low-income people and people of color. The reforms enacted in AB 2147 will put an end to that and, in doing so, make all of California safer for pedestrians.”

Supporters say lower-income communities typically do not have the funding or infrastructure to provide safe crosswalks, while the new law could also prevent a jaywalking arrest from turning serious or fatal, citing incidents in San Clemente, the Bay Area and Sacramento over the past few years.

Or.. why don’t they just follow the rules and use the crosswalks made for pedestrians like everyone else . Doesn’t sound like a problem for them.

They make it sound like they aren’t smart enough to go to and use a crosswalk and therefore are unfairly punished due to the lack of knowledge and non conformity to societal procedures that everyone else seems to have figured out

Honestly, why not? Buyer beware. Its called freedom.

Look at old 1920s videos on YouTube of cities.

You had trolleys, pedestrians, horse carriages, baby stro!!ers, all intermingled and going down and across the street together. But shocked safe woke California would be the first to say, jaywalking is a bullshite offense.

And you never jaywalk.

Is really your contribution to a political bulletin board?

Fellas get out of the cocoon. You ever driven through "these areas". You just gave legal permission for eight guys to swamp your car and "offer" to clean your windshield. You either refuse and have your car damaged, or roll down your window to pay them and risk being jacked. Or in a recent case, have your car damaged, get out of the car with a bat, and have an individual shoot and kill you.

This is the lottery for ambulance chasing lawyers to sue car owners for "bumping" window washers at corners as they fear for their safety.

But then the lack of voter ID is due to racism....bless your hearts.

Yeah okay

You should be allowed to jaywalk

I should be allowed to mirror check people when they walk in the middle of the road like assholes

Road is for cars. Side walk is for walking.

Free state like Newsome said. You just can’t turn your a/c on when it’s 100 plus outside.

The Dodgers approve of this. Bringing back the namesake.

There will now be more hit-and-runs and in a few years, they will pass more legislation to outlaw cars. Lesser penalty for EVs.

Good stuff right here. Ticketing jaywalking is racist.

Instead of abolishing a law, they made a new law that made it legal to break the old law.

Government NEVER rolls back power folks.

They made a huge stink about roads being "racist" because Blacks are more likely hit and killed.
