20 years ago was 2006

Did you mean five years ago?

This is an "old man screams at cloud" thread with lots of virtue signaling, Winnie.

When the Super Bowl came to town, it was a massive party. Here it is Super Bowl week and I haven’t spent two minutes looking up anything related to the Super Bowl.

They’ve sort of killed the framework that used to make it attractive for cities to host, at least from a generalized sweeping local business perspective. Ask any restaurant or bar owner in New Orleans and pretty much all will say they did better with Taylor Swift in town a few months prior than they did with the Super Bowl last year.

Everything is now pretty much nothing but lame corporate orchestrated functions versus just having crowds come in and generally experience what a host city might have to offer.

Television Dominance: NFL games consistently top weekly TV ratings, with billions in revenue from massive broadcast deals. Recent seasons (2025) saw averages of around 18.7 million viewers per regular season game, a near-record high.
High Attendance: The league boasts the highest average per-game attendance of any U.S. sports league, drawing nearly 70,000 fans per game in 2025.
Fantasy Football: Around 60 million people participate in fantasy football, significantly boosting fan engagement.
Super Bowl Viewership: The Super Bowl consistently attracts massive audiences, with over 120 million viewers for recent games.

Agree.

Bills / Jaguars
Bears / Packers (one of best playoff games ever)
Bears / Rams (one of best playoff games ever)
Bills / Broncos (one of best playoff games ever)
Seahawks / Rams (one of best playoff games ever)

Every one of those games was an absolute banger. I might even be forgetting a couple.

For the people saying how bad the NFL sucks, just go watch a 5 minute highlight recap of any of those game (preferably the Bears ones) on YouTube and come back and tell me I'm wrong.

That's fine because the access normal fans get now through podcasts and television is far superior than what we used to get.

Every team has at least 2 or 3 different local podcasts that are legit good. The national podcasts are all very good. There's so much outstanding NFL content now that you could listen 5 hours a day and not hit it all (especially if you're into gambling).

And that's just direct NFL content, not gambling or fantasy football content.

Yes. Absolutely. You must be young. You aren't getting that the NFL was such an unreal cultural force back in the day. It dominated everything.

That is no longer the case. Two things can be true at once: 1) they have gotten wealthier and remain the most popular sport. and 2) they aren't the cultural force the entire country wraps itself in anymore.

those two points make zero sense when the NFL has record viewership for this season. More people are watching, more so than ever, all over the internet, social media, etc and to you its "not the cultural force the entire country wraps itself in anymore" lmfao do you care to elaborate anymore on what it means to be the "the cultural force the entire country wraps itself in?" or just trust me bro?

Swore off the NFL after the NOLA No Call. Don’t miss it one bit. Reviewing my SM posts, I’m shocked at how much time I used to waste watching that shite. Didn’t even realize that the Big Gayme was this weekend until it was mentioned on the news. SO and I usually schedule day trips on our Sundays now. Much more satisfying use of our time.

I’m speaking of Super Bowl week, and as one who has lived in a town which has hosted a few Super Bowls.

Not saying overall interest has died, but it used to be super easy to get geared up for the weekend. That’s just not happening anymore. Not at the same level.

Hell, the same company that pays for TV rights, airs games, covers sports, and breaks news also runs a gambling service and sets lines on games.

It is all entertainment and shady gambling now, not sport.

That was absolutely the last moment in which my interest in it was anything beyond purely casual.

Unlike most of this thread, this is an absolutely valid reason.

That no call was the worst no call in the history of sports, not just football. If I was a Saints fan I’d still be pissed. That Patriot team wasn’t that good, I think Saints win their 2nd Lombardy if they don’t blow that call.

There's zero chance you watched the games and say with a straight face that it's "absolute trash"

Well there's a zero percent chance that I watched an NFL game since 2010, so there's that.

And there's a 100% chance that what I was referring to was the woke content and messaging pushed by the NFL as opposed to the games themselves. I thought that was clear but I'll clarify it now.

And people can downvote me all they want, but it doesn't make me any less correct. If you're watching the NFL you're supporting it. And in supporting it, you're supporting Bad Bunny and Green Day and all the other woke crap that directly contradicts the lifestyles, values and beliefs of the "conservatives" of the board.

But you do you, man. I choose not to suffer through woke advertisements and messaging just to watch a game I used to enjoy.
