There is confusion between overstays and illegal crossings. It is pretty difficult to cross our borders without going through border ports especially with the fences.
Mexicans and Canadians find it easier and safer just to drive or walk thru legally ports and not go back. You just need the required documentation.
Just like driving from San Diego to Tijuana.
