Is there any exceptions in your view?
To big to fail or national security issues?

pretty much this. You can only do free trade with other countries that are willing to do free trade, otherwise you are just fricking over your own industry. Everyone who has had an economics class knows that in an ideal world free trade is the best way, but until you can get to real free trade you have to use what leverage you have to avoid situations like with China since the 90s, ie they can do whatever they want and you have to just take it

Like most conservatives, absolutely.

I am all for free trade. When the countries we export to quit putting tariffs on our products and quit manipulating currency values then we can do the same. Until then we have no other choice. Trade deficits are killing us.

Ok. Are you against other counties applying tariffs/VAT on American goods?

Absolutely.

Reciprocation doesnt help us though.

What if they don't have a tariff on our products, they just produce something a lot cheaper because their labor is so cheap?

Everyone who was around in 2016 remembers IB Freeman, and how Trump proved him wrong. Roger The Chinaman is the 2024 version.

So you agree that open markets are a good thing right ? Well that exactly what Trump is proposing. See Trump gets it that Canada tariffs on American goods like lumber, dairy and a number of other things is tariffed at extreme levels like 200% in some cases but products were open to free movement into America. Trump also wants alignment in stoppage of drugs being made in Mexico, Canada and China not to mention open markets for American products there. If you think this is just a hissy fit then learn more and be stupid less

Nope. Even unilateral free markets are a benefit to the wealthier country.

Tariffs penalize small business and the consumer.

How do you propose we fix other countries tarriffing our goods sold in their country then?

I see it this way. I'm against bullying by me and bullying by others against me. Against both of them, really. I can control the bullying by me, but it's more difficult to control bullying against me by others. Has been my experience that the best way to control bullying by others against me is to give them a good dose of their own medicine. So when someone else is bullying to me, I tend to bust them in the chops. A few times in my life, it led to a big fight (couple times I came out ahead and a couple others I came out behind). The rest of times the bully simple left me alone and started bullying someone else.

Man we are soooo glad you and your buds rescued the USA from the socialist pricks that governed our nation from 1776 to 1955.

With out you guys freeing us from them how would we have ever survived!?

The Middle Class and cost of living in 1955 vs 2024:

$7,900 was the average cost of a 3 bedroom home in the USA in 1955. The average family income in the United States was $4,400. In 2024, the median sales price of a home in the United States was $419,200 in the fourth quarter. The average sales price of a new home was $512,200. In 2024, the average salary in the United States is $62,027.

Thank you for your service sir!

I mean, thank God you came along and the work force participation started to drop so that people could get help from the federal gov! Without you and yours, we were just screwed!

I;ll let someone much smarter than both of us explain it to you.

Mises - Unilateral Free Trade

quote:

Those wise statesmen who wish to see their nations prosper will adopt unilateral free trade, laissez-faire capitalism, and sound money. International cooperation among governments is not required; the market (meaning the people) will do the rest.

When we were on the gold standard.

We arent. Deficits no longer matter in that regard.

Nah. I'm living with the results of you and yours. Thank you Rog! Thank you for making us all aware that so long as we are good little citizens, the federal Gov will gladly pay us!

Also... The Middle Class and cost of living in 1955 vs 2024:

National security concerns are more legitimate, but they can be stretched in pursuit of rent seeking.

I don't disagree with him. My point is how do I force another country to not bully me with tarriffs, which they are and have been doing for years. My lived experience says bust them in the chops. Take the lumps if they come my way.
