This is exactly the right answer. Our Founders knew this, but failed to anticipate the eventual FedGov power grab. As long as CA, MA, NY, NJ don't violate the U.S. Constitution or engage in behavior that directly harms other states, their legislatures and Governors should be allowed to be as stupid as their respective electorates will tolerate.

Individual states and the citizens who live therein are the faces of the movement (if such a thing exists).

No what they fail to account for was a city like NYC outstripping the rest of the state in population. We have to remember the constitution was written before the industrial revolution, which was a boon to cities everywhere.
