Do you think that the government is going to be happy just giving up that money? They will just get it with a different tax.

Why can’t Louisiana do this?

Because Louisiana voters are stupid and elect stupid lawmakers.

Amendment 2 is a 100+ pages of pork and garbage.

If they wanted to lower income tax, make that the only item to vote on.

If they wanted to "give teachers a $2000 raise" make that a single line item.

Louisiana has ~1.5M more people, but a state budget 5x-6x of Mississippi's. To get to the level to be able to make that swap, the state would need to cut a frickton of spending and that's just not going to happen without tax a massive drop in tax revenues forcing it.

Then why is it so successful in Texas? Good roads, good public schools, no tax on groceries or income?

What other taxes do you suggest we raise to compensate for the loss of income taxes?
That’s why I was asking.

I’d prefer a higher sales tax to replace the state income tax. frick increasing the property taxes.

How about we look at the other side of the balance sheet and spend less? Like a responsible business or household ?
Oh I totally agree with this.

The more we cut, the less revenue required to raise.

It is absolutely not that.

I'm not saying it's perfect, but it is not pork.

Kinda sorta.

They agreed to phase it out eventually.

quote:

Earlier this month, the Mississippi House passed a Senate plan that would gradually eliminate the state income tax. Under the plan, the income tax will drop by 0.25% each year until 2030, when it reaches 3%. From that point on, the tax will drop gradually depending on the gap between the state's revenue and expenses until it is eventually eliminated entirely.

So they are working to get it to 3% by 2030.

Louisiana is already at 3%.

Beyond 2030, things are a little iffy. It will rely on surplus, but then there was a typo in the bill, so the whole thing is a little in limbo.

Regardless, this isn't some huge victory over Louisiana.
