Minnesota school district charges parents $900,000 for records request

I have to hand it to them. They are clever bastards. They know it won't cost anything remotely close to this to obtain the records but by demanding such a ridiculous high estimate be paid in advance they know it will keep anyone not in the Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Jeffrey Bezos level of wealth from being able to afford it and they can keep everything in the dark. And we know Minnesota's Attorney General won't lift a finger to do anything about this.

The request called for records dating back to Jan. 2020 in elementary, middle, and high school, according to the Mohrman, Kaardal, & Erickson letter. Specific words that the group was concerned about included “equity, social justice, cultural competency, race, intersectionality, or CRT.” Many of these concepts are linked to the core tenets of critical race theory.
“Equality in Education” asked the school district to provide the record by Dec. 15, though the organization’s legal representation said it would be open to a deadline extension so long as the district kept the organization updated.
On Nov. 12, an attorney representing the district said that it would cost “Equality in Education” $901,121.15 to obtain the records and they must prepay before the district completes their request.

I did email archives for a school in a previous life.
This should take a minimum of 30 minutes of work to complete from their IT team’s perspective. The software to archive a district of 1.5k staff and 12k students was around 40k a year at most.
I currently charge $2k a day for professional services so this guy is killing it I hope.

I’m the old days the parents would just string a couple of them up and just like that, the records would be free and all this bullshite would stop.

Same here. I have redacted 40 volume investigative files with a grease pencil (each volume 1” or more thick) along with countless audio recordings, and never charged anyone in excess of $2,000. These parents are being lied to big time.

So what's the next steps for such a ridiculous move? Isn't it public records that belong to the taxpayer?

Exactly. This reminds me of a medical bill we got. My wife had foot surgery and 2 years later one of the pins came loose. Dr said come in and we’ll get it taken care of. 15 minutes, in and out. Didn’t sign any paper work.
Got a bill for $7k. I asked for a line item bill explaining those costs and never heard back from them.

They still have to pay for the labor of it being done. It takes IT staff and systems in place to accommodate. Not sure how other states work but taxpayers are paying for it anyways in Texas.
Not defending the school They’re obviously Inflating this insanely to scare them off.

If it would cost that much, then the school district has clearly been extremely involved in implementing CRT. Should be all the evidence parents need.

An alternative? Have the county withhold enough in tax dollars to offset the supposed cost of the search.

I assume the school board knows there are some bad documents in there for them.
So if they ever hand the documents over, they'll do a document dump so large that the documents are almost unmanageable. Then, when someone sifts through the millions of papers and finds the bad ones, the school board will say something like "so what, you found 10 documents out of millions."
I bet that's their plan, and that's why the estimate is so large.

At $185 an hour, that is almost 4,900 hours. You could implement an ERP system for half of that. If that is their charge for a records request, then perhaps they need to look at the upgrading their IT personnel.

It's not the computer work they're charging for, it's the cost for lawyers to review everything and come up with excuses for what they can redact and withhold.

I’m not sure I understand why the parents should cover the cost for the school district aka, their employees to cover their asses.
