When they do that it should be like freight trucks by weight and miles. EV's are heavy.

What are the odds that the state gas tax will stay in place?

In short, this law helps close the loophole whereby ICE drivers were subsidizing EV drivers. Shouldn’t this board be thrilled with that?

I don't have a problem with that, but you should have a problem with the government keeping track of where we drive.

Oh, you’re retarded…

Let me dumb it down- We need highways. Currently a significant portion of funding for highways comes from state and federal taxes on gas and diesel. As average fuel consumption declines (due to a combination of higher MPG on ICE vehicles and an increase in the number of electric vehicles), that funding will decline. State and federal transportation departments have to find ways to fill the shortfall. Taxes on miles driven is one of the ways to do that. This is simple stuff.

My truck gets 16 mpg, my honda gets 38 mpg, explain to me how that works out for my tax bill on 100 miles driven in both cars. Both are total BS.

On average, a vehicle’s MPG negatively correlates to its weight. This makes sense from a fuel tax standpoint, since heavier vehicles have a larger impact on wear and tear of roadways. I suspect that if a “mileage” tax is introduced, it will be weighted with the aforementioned principles in mind.

Could you really not reason that out for yourself?

The exodus of businesses from the inner cities will be significant if they do this. We will see businesses move to the suburbs where their executives live to minimize the tax burden on them.

"Simple stuff"? Do you really trust the govt. to keep it simple? Look at the big picture: the govt. is slowly but steadily seeking ways to get more & more personal information on us. Wait till all the details about digital banking comes out. Recall when the Canadian govt. shut down the truckers' bank accounts to stop their protests? All the new IRS agents now hired, does anyone really believe they are attacking only the rich? I don't trust any govt. especially this one...just how liberal is Michigan???

How does any of this address the fact that you progressive dumbasses are forcing electric vehicles on everyone before the world in adequately prepared for them?

He bud, a mustang gt350 weighs 3,805 lbs and gets 16 mpg combined, a 4 banger mustang weighs 3,492 and gets 24 mpg combined. Is it fair for a gt owner to have to pay that much more in tax for the same distance driven while only being 300 lbs more. If I’m driving alone and the 4cly has 4 people, it now weighs more. Taxing actual milage driven and not on a gallon of gas makes alot more sense.

So a tax on miles driven and a gas tax.

Do you honestly believe they are going to get rid of the gas tax?

If you drive a ICE vehicle, the amount of tax you pay is based on fuel consumption, which is a reasonable analog to “distance driven”.

I don’t see the problem here.
An even better analog would be taxing kWH. And no privacy concerns. Interestingly, MI chose the latter. I'll let you guess why.

Hell, since batteries have a pretty finite life an even better analogy would be taxing battery capacity, either by yearly assessment, or by a credit upon sale to next owner.

Don’t like this at all. Especially for the automakers. This discourages driving your vehicle.

And why would Michigan want to frick with anyone’s desire to drive a car?

Giving gov’t domain over the road system is as dumb as giving them domain over the educational system.
