What tax cuts are Edwards proposing? If the legislature does nothing, we get a big tax cut. If they pass new taxes then we will see tax increases. The governor is trying to have it both ways.

Yep...$300 million is extra state income tax collections thanks to the federal tax cuts

With increased state income tax collections plus 1/3 cent sales tax, that covers around 2/3 of the billion dollars that the 1 cent tax was supposed to raise. Now add in the fact that oil prices are up from around $45/barrel this time last year to $65-70/barrel and the extra money the state is making off higher oil prices.

not even half of the 1.4 billion falling off the books, and the 1/3 cent has failed so far

Do you know about what the state's revenue from oil was last year? Serious question...I did a quick search on it before my last post and couldn't really find anything. I would assume a 40% increase in oil price would be a decent sized revenue increase for LA

The fact is Edwards and the legislature needed to make major cuts in spending when he took over in 2015, but instead they tried to keep the status quo and add Medicaid Expansion. With the state in recession and folks leaving that is impossible without major tax increases that hurt the economy and push more folks out the door.
If we had begun to change out spending habits three years ago then a lot of this could have been avoided.

looking at the revenue estimating committee pub, looks like they used a crude price forecast of $54 for the fiscal year, which ends at the end of this month
and unless there's a big shock for june, looks like $416m for severance and $144m for royalties

they also indicate the forecast average for the upcoming fiscal year is $59, and they are budgeting based on a forecast of 427m for severance and 144 (again) for royalty

No doubt, but he didn't say he was going to raise taxes a Billion plus either.
He did say he was going to cut back on the nursing homes, right? He also promised the Medicaid Expansion at no cost. What else did he promise besides being honest and moral?
The guy came out the legislature, he knows the ropes, he knew the big picture, and he wanted the job.
After two plus years as governor, he has no real plan only tax increases. La. is climbing the ladder as far as taxes go and really there is little to show for it.
He did say he was going to cut back on the nursing homes, right? He also promised the Medicaid Expansion at no cost. What else did he promise besides being honest and moral?

don't know. if he did, that's something that could legitimately be hung around his neck, just like the medicaid expansion will when we have to start paying for a bigger portion of it

SCOTUS solved this problem for Louisiana.
Simply pass a bill similar to what South Dakota did for online purchases.

Uhmmm, he did. Look at the linked graph below. His administration is between the high points of the Katrina revenue surge and the JBE administration.
He could have cut more, but that is a FAR cry from saying he is some sort of JBE clone in the spending department.
