What about the guy from Christchurch?

The guy who shot up the Mosque? No, he wasn't mentally ill and certainly wasn't a schizophrenic. His manifesto against Muslims sounded like stuff I've read here on the Poli Board, absent the bullets, of course.

If you want to redefine schizophrenia to include all murderous bigots, we are having a different discussion. I don't see schizophrenia that way.

I wish I could have put like a sarcasm tag in the post somehow.

Oh yeah, I did. I put it in quotations.

I'm not familiar with you and there are plenty of people that literally believe that type of stuff here

Mental Illness isn't just about knowing right from wrong, what kind of nonsense is that?

Serial Killers have consistently very messed up child hoods.

Usually an abusive mother and absent father.

1) You're confusing a serial killer, who gets victims one at a time usually, vs a mass shooter, who usually gets multiple victims at a time

I totally know the difference. I'm not confusing anything.

Sociopaths are mentally ill.

And John Douglas perception is they still know right from wrong and is the reason why they belong in jail and not in an mental institution.

Or maybe you're just a selfish, narcissistic a-hole who wants attention.

Is that mental illness? it's debatable.

I don't think mental illness is the catch-all we'd like it to be.

It almost appears to be the new boogy man. I could be wrong and good chance I am, just seems to be blown out of proportion.

Anyone who kills for enjoyment, for profit, for vengeance, for political ideology, etc. is suffering from some form of mental health/instabilities issues. The only justification for killing someone is to preserve your life or the criminal justice system provides capital punishment for certain crimes against other people.

we also have similar measurable rates of mental illness to other countries, all of which have much less mass violence.

Aren’t these the same countries we’re supposed to want to emulate culturally and economically for being more focused on happiness and not money?

When American kids are 3 times as likely to be prescribed psychotropic drugs than their European counterparts, I don’t see how you can remove mental illness from the equation.

Or just evil. Yes, there are perfectly sane people in the work who are not ill but plain evil.

Some people are just evil and need to be put down. We use to understand this.

"Mass shooting" was in the topic title. So yeah, guns are the only murder weapon being discussed here.

This is probably the reasoning behind most killers in history.

This. Mass killers tend to lack empathy or have extreme anger. This is either towards everyone or a certain group (race, women, etc).

The kid who keeps a journal with a hitlist and rape fantasies in high school is mentally ill and should not have a gun.
The kid who tortures animals in school is mentally ill and should not have a gun.

I know that we seem to think that what you do as a minor should not affect you as an adult so we seal juvenile records and keep everything that happens with minors private. Maybe we need to rethink that. In both examples above, neither should get a gun without some psychiatric assessment that they are somehow cured.

Violence by true schizophrenics is very rare.

Are you making the case that only people diagnosable as a schizophrenic are mentally ill? This is the problem in the argument by the OP. “Mentally ill” is a pretty broad category, and I think would encompass more than “not knowing right from wrong.” Arguably, having a compulsion to commit behavior you know is wrong and will hurt people seems like a good indicator of a mind that could use some therapy.
