The president said his administration will allow up to 300,000 metric tons of ground beef to be imported without an “out-of-quota tariff” in the next 90 days.

The imported product would be sold at 25 percent below market price — a move Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie (R) called a “slap in the face to American cattlemen & consumers.”

“Worse than socialism! Dumping foreign beef in U.S. markets can temporarily lower prices but it won’t incentivize American farmers to raise more beef,” Massie wrote on social media.

quote:

The GOP lawmaker urged the Trump administration to bring back labels indicating which countries products were imported from and called on Congress to pass his Processing Revival and Intrastate Meat Exemption (PRIME) Act.

The PRIME Act would permit states to allow farmers and ranchers to slaughter their livestock at local slaughterhouses and reduce reliance on the select meat processing centers approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Former GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (Ga.) also joined in on criticizing the move, accusing the Trump administration of “making it even harder for American beef ranchers and producers.”

If Congress won’t pass the PRIME act, then importing beef is a reasonable stop-gap to provide citizens with affordable meat.

The Massholes bitching about Trump solving a problem that Congress won’t are retarded.

So tariffs DO raise costs to consumers? I was told that was not the case...

Is Massie wrong on this? I’d like to know which countries meat is coming from and give more flexibility on where you can have your meat processed at.

I think this would be excellent for the GOP to get behind.

Yup; the meat packer masters have been playing hardball with their control of the industry.

Show them an alternative which excludes them and they might rethink their position some.

So now Massie supports tariffs to artificially increase prices?

McMassie says it, doesn't mean it's true.

We need to work better at aiding ranchers to produce more at lower cost. Period.

This is what happens when you fail for decades to act to protect generational family farms. We’ve made it almost impossible for family farmland to be passed on to future generations but it’s doubly difficult when the cost of raising cattle is cost prohibitive. It’s easier to sell off the acreage to a developer who slaps up housing all over it than to keep the farm.

Well said.

Who elected MTG and Massie to anything? Why do they act like anyone cares about their viewpoints?

Are they running for President when they couldnt get elected as dog catchers?

So are you for the Prime Act or against it?

Who introduced the Prime Act in the House?

The rancher I work with has been "complaining" about people taking 4x the money they need to make a profit. He won't ask that much, it ain't right. So he sales his beef at 2X straight to consumers.

Sounds like the problem is good old American greed and consumers with too much money.

Not even close to a gotcha quip. 4 processors handling almost everything throughout the country on pork and beef and they lowball ranchers and rape the customers. These companies have foreign ownerships in some cases

Arizona and California import feeder stock since forever, from Mexico. That is why feedlots in those states shutdown a year ago. No cows to fatten and slaughter
