The experiences I have with friends who have kids who venture this direction (leftism AND trans), I can say:
- lack of discipline at a young age >> mostly YES
- a shitty group of friends >> somewhat, see below

Regarding friends, they don't have to be "shitty" in the traditional sense. They might be A students that are full-woke and full anti-white and hate traditional America.
Don't forget the destructive power of social media and the dopamine produced in IT'S brain with every 'thumbs-up' and 'like' and 'you're so brave' comment. Starting with an ear-piercing x2 and some black lipstick and multiply that by a couple years. a few more "alterations" and 10,000 more 'likes' and soon IT is getting most of IT'S validation from social media.
