Muhh…FREE SPEEECH…OUR RIGHTS BEING ERODED.
The general American populace are morons and have not been properly educated.
So let me give a brief civic lesson to the rubes that may be on this board.
Freedom of speech grants the right to speak, but it doesn't shield you from the fallout. Say what you want, but actions have reactions—social, legal, or otherwise. Take Jimmy Kimmel's recent suspension: after his edgy monologue on the Charlie Kirk killing, ABC yanked his show indefinitely amid FCC threats and affiliate boycotts, a textbook case of private and regulatory consequences biting back.
Morons who think "free speech" means "no consequences" miss the point: words carry weight, and society responds. Meanwhile, the American left media is using this Jimmy Kimmel deal to gaslight the rubes in our society that lack basic understanding of basic civics, pretending government pressure is the sole villain while ignoring how networks always cave to backlash—distorting the First Amendment into a fairy tale of total impunity.

Fact is, jimmys take on the killer being MAGA is exactly the type of rhetoric that led to the murder. He and others have simply gotten away with - and have no doubt been directed to say - all of their blatant lies that have no logical standing.
In a non clown world, there would be zero controversy around the Kimmel situation.

The sad part is Disney is using Charlie Kirk’s death to get out of a terrible contract.

FCC shouldn’t be driving this, but affiliates pulling out is the market at work.

Kimmel thought it was hilarious when Tucker was fired
Megyn Kelly was fired but no one said anything
But if you are a leftist lunatic it's the end of the world

To a degree. It doesn't protect you from the fallout from a private employer, but it does protect you from the fallout from the federal or state government. The Kimmel situation is toeing the line IMO.
If ABC acted alone with no government influence, then I 100% agree with you. The first amendment is completely irrelevant to the conversation. If the FCC threatened ABC and forced their hand then the first amendment absolutely comes into play.
The question then becomes whether Kimmel was engaged in speech that is protected under the first amendment.
To use an analogy, if Chicken decided to ban you for criticizing the Biden administration, nobody in their right mind would argue that that is a violation of the first amendment. Tigerdroppings is a private message board and Chicken can ban you for whatever he wants. If, however, Chicken banned you for criticizing the Biden administration because the Biden administration threatened to shut Tigerdroppings down if he didn't ban you, that's a whole nother ball of wax and absolutely implicates the first amendment.

It’s well within the FCCs scope, they just have been turning a blind eye.
quote:
Any license granted by us at the FCC, that comes with it an obligation to operate in the public interest,” the chairman explained. “You can make a strong argument that this is sort of an intentional effort to mislead the American people, about a very core, fundamental fact, of a very important matter,” Carr said of Kimmel’s remarks about Kirk’s alleged killer.

I love all the idiots on the left who keep spouting this...Someone smartly pointed out last night - Free Speech means you don't get arrested (by the Government). It doesn't mean there are not public and private repercussions. People are fired for violating employment policies as we've witnessed. You can be sued for slander as well.
I also love the term 'accountability culture' -- We've needed it for a while. No one was digging up old tweets of Kimmel using the 'N' word, dressing in blackface. This was something said politically.
Finally, saying he 'is a comedian'... he once was a comedian - This is why its allowed for parody and irony. Kimmel and Colbert (and Steward, Noah, etc.) have become 'agents provocateur' for the left, hiding behind comedy, thinking they are immune.
Market forces, forced Kimmel off the air.
I cannot believe how fast this nation is healing... never would I imagine it would only be 9 months into the Trump Administration.
MAGA Forever.

ABC wanted to get rid of Kimmel, this has nothing to do with free speech or cancel culture. They dont want to piss off the FCC with the deal they're with TENGA.

You give up free speech when you sign your work for a media company. It's their rules at that point.
He wasn't on a street corner or some protest. He was at work, on their property, under their employment, representing them.
What dont they understand

Now if only the Browns can figure out a way to get out of the DeShaun Watson contract.

Media preys on the uneducated 24/7. Have you ever watched a soap opera or an NFL football game?

I remember conservatives being policed and banned from Twitter.
I remember Rosanne losing her spot at the head of her own show.
Gina Carano fired from Disney
They tried to cancel the uncancellable Dave Chappell
MyPillows removed from retailers
Even non conservative Joe Rogan was targeted
Screw these people

This is a good point. If people still watched Late Night TV, both Kimmel and Colbert would still be on. They just needed an excuse and they can get on the good side of the President by doing so. Win-win.

It's not even about social consequences for free speech. He went out and basically did exactly what Alex Jones did and absolutely none of them are going to defend Jones today. You can't just go out and lie about people- that is not 'free' speech by definition

This is the case. Kimmel's ratings were in the tank and he was going to be canceled eventually anyway. The local ABC affiliates were refusing to air Kimmel's show after this.

The "FCC" didn't threaten anyone. A single FCC commissioner, 1 of 5, made some comments. He has one vote. The "FCC" as a regulatory body did nothing regarding Charlie Kirk or Jimmy Kimmel.
But, even if that were the case, the FCC is a regulatory body whose sole purpose is to regulate broadcast television and radio. It is 100 percent within their purview to investigate and ensure that no rules were being broken.
If any investigation into TV shows is a violation of free speech, then why do we even have the FCC?

I think I would say it differently. The Bill of Rights protects the citizen from the government. It limits governmental authority, but has little implication for the relationship between you and your employer. The laws governing employer-employee relationships are largely left to the states, with some notable exceptions.
The notion that ABC as a private employer has violated Kimmel's first amendment protections seem preposterous. Private employers often require NDA agreements as a condition of employment. They can absolutely control what you can and can't say, and if you violate that, they can fire you and even seek damages.

I think Charlie would have pointed out to you it’s not a problem of education, it’s about wisdom. People can be educated but not wise.

It’s a regulated market, FCC is the regulator. Mainstream media has been a threat to national security for too long, IMO this is within their scope. They can lie and say this is about saying mean things regarding Trump, but it’s untrue. This situation, along with virtually all others is centered around ideological violence, fostered by liars like Kimmel.
