Meanwhile, Common Core appears to be a bust

First Common Core H.S. grads worst prepared in years.

For the third time in a row since Common Core was fully phased in nationwide, U.S. student test scores on the nation’s broadest and most respected test have dropped, a reversal of an upward trend between 1990 and 2015. Further, the class of 2019, the first to experience all four high school years under Common Core, is the worst-prepared for college in 15 years, according to a new report.

Thanks, Eddie.

Worked exactly as planned...

I always assumed common core was a perfect way to understand how a liberal thinks. It’s like the most ridiculous way to do simple math problems. I assume that’s how they look at logical life as well which is probably why they’re so fricked up. So, as mathematics is the language of God so is common core the language of communist liberals.

Well, the goal of the left is to dumb down the populace, so this is working as planned.

It was a bust the minute a district put it in place.

Man I've seen some of my son's math homework the past several years, I can honestly say that shite makes my head hurt!

Any time the Feds have to threaten every state to implement a program or else lose funding you know it has to be bad.

I’m shocked I tell you. Just shocked.

President Obama, his Education Secretary Arne Duncan, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Bill Gates, and myriad other self-described education reformers promised Common Core would do exactly the opposite of what has happened: improve U.S. student achievement.
Some may wonder why Bill Gates was involved with this. Follow the money. We need his products to teach the curriculum and test the students. He is for Common Core, because it makes him rich, not because of some altruistic motive.

If any of you have kids in high school, some districts are actually forcing some to take classes that only helps the district, not the kids. Calling it "college prep" but actually only for the year end test scores...gov't money at work.
kids is stoopid because of commin kor

I retired from my most beloved occupation - high school math teacher - in 2013 mostly because of the red tape involved with planning to implement common core.
But the 'math problems' everyone on the internet complains about is sort of a weird bird.
The problem is they got the horse before the cart - kids need to be taught fundamental math FACTs just the way they always have - rote manipulation thru traditional adding and subtracting and multiplication until they have that down pat.
THEN - use that basic knowledge as a springboard to making ALGEBRA seem a little less daunting.
Kids already should know the 6x8 = 48
and they should recognize that 6 can also be written by 4 + 2 and 8 by 5 + 3
then introduce substitution and you get (4+2)(5+3) and expand that into
4x5 + 4x3 + 2x5 + 2x3 and get 20 + 12 + 10 + 6 = 48 !!
Explain that they have just done ALGEBRA and introduce them to (a+b)(c+d) and off you go!!!
I was doing this with my beginning algebra students long before common core came along.
THEN I find out they are tying to teach MULTIPLICATION by using ALGEBRA concepts and I was W.T.F!!! - I'm outta here!!!

There are some states that still don't use Common Core, Texas, for example.
I know the Federalist is nothing more than right wing attempts at "journalism", but if they can't even get the first sentence factually correct... come on.

I've been confused at times and had to google for help.
But... my third grader is doing algebra. And she completely understands it.
When LA was in charge of our own standards, I learned algebra in 9th grade.

Are you referring to mandatory ACT prep classes?
I agree that is a bunch of BS... but that's because the state requires every HS kid to take the ACT... and the school's grade is based on it.
That's not common core... that's John White being an idiot.

What I have found is that the kids who started their school career inside of Common Core get it. It's been my observation that Common Core was supposed to be about uniform standards in education. Such as for example, a student needs to be proficient in long division by 4th grade or able to trad and comprehend polysyllabic words by a certain grade level. How they get to those levels is up to the individual schools/systems
