Angela Chao, the billionaire sister-in-law of Sen. Mitch McConnell, was drunk when she accidentally reversed her Tesla into a pond on a Texas ranch and died last month, according to police.
The revelation was detailed in a report released Wednesday by the Blanco County Sheriff’s Office, which said Chao’s blood alcohol level was nearly three times the state’s legal limit when she backed her car into the pond while making a three-point turn.
The sheriff’s office investigation determined Chao’s Feb. 10 death was “an unfortunate accident,” according to the report.
The tragedy occurred as Chao, the former CEO of dry bulk shipping giant Foremost Group, was with seven of her girlfriends at a sprawling 4,500-acre private property in Texas’ Hill Country for what was supposed to be a celebratory weekend.
After enjoying dinner at the property’s guest house, the 50-year-old decided around 11:37 p.m. to make the short drive in her Tesla Model X SUV to her lodgings on the property.
Video showed her “walk unsteadily to her vehicle,” according to the report.
Moments later, she frantically called her friends in a panic after backing over an embankment and sinking into a pond just yards from the guest house.
One of Chao’s friends, Amber Keinan, told detectives that Chao called her at 11:42 p.m. and said the car was in the pond and she was trapped inside.
The two continued talking on the phone for eight minutes as the car slowly sank until it was completely submerged.
“Chao told Keinan the water was rising and she was going to die and said “I love you” to Keinan prior to the vehicle going under water,” police said in the report.
Other friends desperately swam to the car to try and help while Keinan paddled out in a kayak, police said.

Somewhere in the afterlife Ted Kennedy is singing Ironic at a karaoke bar.

One has to be pretty damn drunk to back your car into a pond.
But hey, celebratory…

Elaine Chao is almost 71 and has (had?) a 50-year old sister, which seems relatively extreme.
Their father is still alive and pushing 100.

So in 8 minutes she couldn’t figure out how to roll down a window and climb out of a slowly sinking car?

Do the headrests have the window breaking arms on this model?

Three times the legal limit.

People born into wealth struggle to wipe their own asses for the most part.
They aren’t real problem solvers.

They have manual window cranks in a EV? You think she was strong enough to kick out? The lady drowned and they are blaming her. Nice. At least it wasn't two to the back of the head.

Does this say anything about the abilities of these seven women to think outside the box in a pressure situation? It was probably cold but eight minutes on the phone. Not as quick thinking as out former president JF Kennedy when his PT boat was sliced in half by the Japanese in WWII.
Should have invited a couple of men.

When this story first came out, it mentioned the ranch hand and his wife came out after hearing the activity.
-Then 2 sheriff deputies after they call 911
-Then a bit after that Fire Dept came out and a tow truck.
They didn't get her out of the car till the tow truck pulled it out of the lake. I can't understand how the ranch hand or anybody could get a 5lb mall and metal rod to bust the side glass out.
The article said when the FD showed up hte deputies were standing on the car in the water. So it wasn't that deep. There are lot of details we don't know in the events.
I know they have laminated glass and it is difficult to bust comparatively to most cars.

does this mean insurance doesn't have to pay?

I bet elon did this remotely. scary thought that someone could control your car remotely, back you into a pond, and not allow the doors or windows to unlock/roll down.

At the time of her death, Chao had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.233 grams per 100 milliliters — almost three times Texas’ legal limit of .08, according to the police report.

Does water effect the electronics?

Hell is the most appropriate place for a karoake bar.

Sounds like she flunked the screen test for a remake of The Stunt Man.
