Marco Rubio: Congress needs long-term solution for flood insurance program

quote:
If Congress fails to act, the National Flood Insurance Program will expire in two weeks, leaving those with coverage in limbo and forcing delays in real estate transactions. As Floridians continue to recover and rebuild our communities from last year’s hurricane, it is paramount that Congress quickly reauthorize the program. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Florida has nearly 1.8 million flood insurance policies in force, and it accounts for more than one-third of policies nationwide. Contrary to what some may think, this program is not a luxury but a necessity for Floridians, who have paid more than their fair share.
quote:
No matter our policy differences on the best way to reform the program, our top priority must be ensuring it does not lapse for any amount of time. Between 2008 and 2012, there were 14 short-term extensions and five program lapses.
Let us be clear about what a lapse would mean. If the flood insurance program is not reauthorized by July 31, insurance agents participating in the program will be unable to issue new policies. That means Florida’s real estate market will be thrown into chaos, as flood insurance is a prerequisite in special flood hazard areas for federally backed mortgage loans. We cannot allow this type of uncertainty in the middle of hurricane season.

Marco is one of the very few in Congress who understands the “little man” the hard working people of the United States. We must pass this extension to ensure MILLIONS of Americans are not left without any coverage during hurricane season. I shudder to think of the atrocity if it were not for Marco’s foresight.

Marco Rubio, king of the Earned Income Tax Credit, better known as illegals debit card.
I lived in Lousiana in Mandeville, I bought a rider on my house insurance for flooding, cant people in Florida do the same.......or dont build a home in a flood plain.....there is a reason it was cheap.
On a sidenote, I worked with a guy in New Orleans who bragged about what a great price he got on a home in a new subdivision. Rainy season his house flooded and he wanted me to see it. Ranting and raving about how the builder should have told him it was prone to flooding (now this was a northern boy). So I went to see his house.....and his backyard had a bunch of cypress trees, them yankees aint too sharp.

Back to doing these threads again? Ugh

The best way to insure you won't need flood insurance is to stop building houses where you once duck hunted.

NEWSFLASH: Quit Rubio's 2020 campaign. He is a turncoat loser and everybody knows it. He has about as much of a chance as Kasich.

I don't believe anything you wrote in that post.

The flood insurance program is a cash cow for people who are willing to have their houses flooded once in a while.
I was in SELA for Katrina and had been paying about $23/month for flood insurance for maybe 2 years.
I got $51,000 from flood insurance as a result of Katrina damage and my premium increased to $30/month until I sold the house a year later.
A little over $600 into the program and $50k out. That’s a great investment.

Not really... people are paying premiums for coverage against flood. There are events like Katrina and Sandy that the feds need to subsidize but the plan is geared to be self sustaining.
The "shitload of tax dollars" is not NFIP but FEMA. FEMA will come behind and give assistance to those without flood insurance.

Stop building flat on the ground in known flood zones.

ugh. I despise this screed. Lots of people are "hard working". EVEN highly compensated people work HARD.
It is divisive and silly.

If only congress would get out of the pockets of insurance companies and commissioners!!!!!! The only common sense thing to do is have a national voluntary “catastrophe insurance” program. It would cover fire water wind earthquake etc. the premiums would be cheap but the state insurance commissioners would get any graft.

Bingo. Increasing impervious areas in a watershed causes more flooding and the 100-year flood plain is creeping upwards at an impressive rate. Those flood maps need to be more dynamic.
Its a strategy that frustrates the hell out of me at work.. buy cheap floodplain property, get your no rise cert, then bitch and moan when you flood because you don't understand what a 100-year event is

Florida has over 1.7 million NFIP policies in force. Louisiana has around 500K and Texas has around 600K.
Rubio is doing his job protecting his state. I have no doubt that Kennedy and Cassidy will do the same.

Flood insurance = welfare for developers and the home building industry and subsidizes poor planning and irresponsible development. Look no further than Livingston East Baton Rouge, and Ascension Parishes. The taxpayers should not have to bail you out if you build your house in a swamp or along a river.
Is this why The Great Orange Emperor calls him "Little Marco?"

I agree with him on this point.
However I am skeptical of any proposed solution to this very real problem proposed by Rubio, particularly because of his proposed solution to the very real problem of illegal immigration.

Take out the quotes from “little man” so it is literal and this becomes a true statement.
