Upon further thought... alert Delta to circle and call for some military jets to take out rocket launcher?
Flight 800 is rumored to have been a rocket launcher.

Non credible threat. Like a bogus ELT alert on Guard, but its enough for the Jackasses at PANYNJ to shite themselves. For an airline pilot not to know what a MANPAD is disturbing. Obviously not a Military trained Aviator.

I’m an airline pilot. If I polled my coworkers I’d guess about 70% would not know what a MANPAD is. The ones that do know would mostly be bc ex military guys.

the weapon system that we're discussing the theoretical presence of would be very difficult to locate. they are not big. you can literally pick them up and fire them from your shoulder. it's what the Afghans used against the Soviet Hind helicopters in the mountains. they kept them under cover until a bird was in the area, pulled them out and shot down the helicopter, then hid them again and vanished. it's a passive system, so no one knows they're even there until the missile is fired.
obviously we're talking very theoretically here, but if Stingers showed up in CONUS in the hands of the bad guys, it would be a significant problem

I was more concerned that the ATC transposed the flight number. An honest mistake that really didn’t matter in this case, but what if he does that with altitudes or directions?

The whole incident was preposterous. A SAFIRE alert from insideTerminal C at Laguardia ? I know there are FAA declaration regs , but still, even the ACC's didn't take it seriously.

Someone turn in a rocket launcher in Los Angeles about 10 years ago. It was the buy back your guns plan by LA city. It could happen.
