I'll bet $9,000 UHC doesn't pay anything close to $9,000.

Sorry, I meant "in network" pricing.

The nearest hospital to me is not in my network. We drove past it when I had a kidney stone (which is incredibly painful)....I'm sure this guy's cut was not so serious that he could not have taken a few minutes to get the address of a facility in his network, or perhaps visit an urgent care center instead of the ER.

The hospital supposedly charges way more than any hospital in the area for a number of other procedures as well. If it wasn't an emergency they should tell the guy that their charges start at $8200 for being admitted to the ER. But obviously they want to snake as much money as they can out of the system.

While the cut should have been handled by a regular doctor before then, you probably don't want to rest overnight or over a weekend on a cut that may become aggravated.

I went to an ER for my rabbies shots and did the follow-up treatment there (at their request). It was billed reasonably and they appear to handle the ER like a regular doctor's office for some visits... the only diff being that you walk into an ER room instead of an standard treatment room.

He should sign up for Obamacare and say it was a pre-existing condition. Should be covered, right?

Yeah that'll work.

We have a healthcare cost problem, not necessrily a health insurance problem. Insurance costs so much because of the outrageous cost of the health care. And because everyone wants health insurance to cover any and everything.

1. Do you have a problem with capitalism?
2. He chose a hospital not within his network. That's on him. He had days to research. Raises the rate.
3. It was not an emergency. Raises the rate.
4. He made several decisions that increased his price. That's on him. No sympathy.

I support this. People need to learn that ERs are not primary care offices. They are for EMERGENCIES.

Individuals who go for non-emergent situations should be charged an excessive amount to discourage them from doing it again.

I call it the "Waste Our Time Fee".

Got two snakebite anti-venom treatments @ $88K plus; probably didn't need the second...but the doctor was thinking lawyer instead of patient. Total bill...$181,000.

Yes he did.

Should utility companies be able to charge thousands of dollars in late fees if you are two days late with a payment?

Non sequitur much?

Yes, they should be able to charge whatever they want in late fees. They only charge them when I agree to their contract where the fees are laid out.

No one forced anything on him. He went to the most expensive hospital in the area, out of network, for a non-emergency visit in the ER. He tied up a system that already is strained.

9000 dollars is half the annual salary of a minimum wage worker; let that sink in.

It's free market. If a hospital wants to rape people for ER visits it's their rights. We have Americans have decided that insane profits for medical treatment are okay and we fight for them. So let the market handle it.

1) You don't understand profit

2) You don't understand that this is no "free market". Hospitals are forced to serve those who have no interest in paying. How is that free market?

American health care is probably 35% free market.

I am with you Green Chili.

I mean just last week I found out I needed to fly to Dallas. I didn't book a commercial ticket for a few days and then decided fack it I will just rent a jet. Can you believe they charged me $10K???? Damn flight was less than an hour! I mean seriously how can they think I should be responsible for that decision.

What does delinquency in payment have to do with someone opting to use a service and not wanting to pay for it when he had immeasurable number of options? He could have handled it several ways - some would have cost him nil or close to it and some would cost him thousands. He made a choice and it is everyone in the worlds fault except his.
