re: Mamdani didn’t win NYC, he won a foreign city wearing the NYC skin suit

No, he lead with it, just like you did.
Right because he was talking about what made NYC great and gave it its reputation. It wasn’t made great by electing socialists.
That reputation was made in the distant past, farther back than 50 years. Thus his graphic. It’s been a gradual decline to the point of electing a socialist

What percentage of those 98% "white people" in 1910 were immigrants do you think?
I'll even help you out with a hint: The number is a lot fricking bigger than 2%

No argument.
The foreign invaders now have a full-fledged beachhead on our American soil. It's a key historical signpost. And not a good one, to put it mildly.

It was much bigger than 2%. Immigrants then assimilated and didn’t vote for socialists.
He used a shitty graphic, foreign born New Yorkers are still what led to Mamdani being elected. Socialists aren’t who gave NYC its rep and why he didn’t win the real NYC

Do you realize how dumb that take is when he shows in his own graphic that the biggest drop in white population was 50 years ago?

quote:Yeah, he had to because if he’d used a chart that actually reflected the foreign-born share of NYC’s population, it would’ve shown the opposite of his point. The last fifty years have been way below the city’s historical average and are still lower than historical levels through most of its history. He would have been better on far sturdier ground had he stuck to attacking the mind-virus of socialism itself rather than the "whiteness" of the city (or lack thereof). I would even have agreed with him.
He used a shitty graphic

I missed this at the jump with the back and forth with OP.
Damn.
When people tell you who they are, believe them.

You keep posting stats about the current foreign-born population, but that can’t logically be the issue since NYC has had much higher foreign-born numbers for most of its history. So if that’s the concern, it doesn’t hold up.

My honest opinion is the lion’s share of the blame falls at the feet of the leadership. Poor leadership is what got Mamdani elected.
Foreign born New Yorkers voting for Mamdani is just a symptom of the poor leadership

So you don’t actually agree with the guy in the OP then? Because we can go through it line by line if you want, but it’s hard to take his conclusions seriously when the whole thing is built on a premise that doesn’t match verifiable reality.
You can get there pretty easily just by following the logic of what he’s actually saying but it’s hard to have an honest discussion when people keep hiding behind euphemisms. If that’s what he really believes, then he should have the backbone to say it outright and stand by it.

Plus poor candidates that opposed him. You had Grandma Covid Killer Cuomo and a beret wearing Hell’s Angel opposing him. Neither candidate could compete on what Mamdani was offering free this, free that, and free everything.
With all that “free stuff” you still have to find a way to pay for all those priorities. You can expect Mamdani to pivot away from free but still raise taxes.

Replacement theory in action.
It's a similar story in California I bet. Both NY and California had negative domestic migration and only increase their population each year due to incoming foreign immigration.

NYC singlehandedly has the largest Muslim population out of any major US city. Most of them organize as a collective when it comes to voting, and Mamdani aligns with their religious views. That’s a huge reason why he won.
