Unless you're having sex at school or sharing needles there, HIV+ kids aren't a risk for transmitting that virus. Not so for the other diseases that schools require being vaccinated for which are passed through breathing/coughing.

Get vaccinated. Then you don’t have to worry about that.

Not everyone can be vaccinated and vaccines aren't 100% effective.

Kids get a lot of booboos.
There was a kid in another classroom at one of my kid's schools that had a messy ostomy bag that wasn't well cared for that was HIV positive. I found that more risky than my vaccinated kid catching mumps from an unvaccinated kid.

Then homeschool
My body my choice.
My body my choice.

The onus should never be on one child to protect another.
Period.

But I'm not sure I agree with having kids completely un vaccinated in the school system.
Why? They let HIV kids in...
Some kids have legit medical reasons why they can't take certain vaccines. Not just because their parents are stupid.

Sure, but how rare is this? a bag PLUS HIV positve? Geez, poor kid

That's a significant health issue that you were right to be concerned about. Even if there was a HIV vaccine I don't think it would be school-mandated, though, because in the general case HIV isn't a risk to casual contact.

quote:Exactly. So if you want to not vax your kids you can choose to send them to a private school that allows that or homeschool as you said
My body my choice.
But a govt run school should be allowed to have requirements just as a private school would for its students.

This isn't a discussion for the 0.01% of the population.

Those parents have choices to make, then... it's not on everyone else to protect their child.

How many private schools allow unvaccinated? I'd think, maybe I'm completely wrong here, that most private schools like most catholic and religions schools would be more PRO vaccine than public schools?

Any politics that operationalizes this will have to make peace with considerably more preventable diseases, deaths, disability, and higher healthcare costs.

Yeah, I felt bad for the kid- had a whole host of issues.
As for rarity? Hopefully really freaking rare... then again, those things aren't typically disclosed, I had no business knowing about it aside from being friends with a paraprofessional that should not have told me.

Or... parents can tailor their child's needs in a way that doesn't depend on "the herd".
We aren't talking about a peanut butter free classroom, but of preventative interventions that do come with a risk profile.

there are going to be tradeoffs. I had my kids vaccinated because I thought the health benefits were significant and risks were minimal relative to the benefit, plus it allows them to go to a school with kids who have health problems they wouldn't otherwise because their parents wouldn't expose them to risk. It's helped my kids develop some empathy for those with health problems - not a bad thing.
