MA Gov. begs Feds to fast track pipeline approval, after bragging about anti-O&G record

Governor Maura Healey is asking the Trump administration to move faster on a natural gas pipeline expansion she once made a political career out of opposing. The request landed on October 1, about a month before the November 2026 general election, in a letter to Energy Secretary Chris Wright urging federal agencies to clear reviews for Enbridge’s Algonquin Reliable Affordable Resilient Enhancement project, known as Project RARE.
Healey wrote that she and Wright have discussed “our mutual desire to get more U.S. natural gas into New England to reduce reliance on higher-cost imported fuel and lower costs for customers.” Her office says the project would serve about 600,000 gas customers and cut bills by roughly $40 million a year, or about $400 million over the ten-year Eversource contracts the Department of Public Utilities approved in January. The planned in-service date is 2028; the contracts start November 1, 2029. FERC opened environmental review in February under the pre-filing process.
The political timing is hard to miss. Energy costs are a central issue in her reelection race against Republican Mike Minogue, who has made more pipeline capacity a campaign plank and has criticized the state’s offshore-wind push. Healey’s Thursday statement framed the letter as “all-of-the-above” policy that still includes solar, wind, storage, nuclear, geothermal, hydro, and gas, with the developer — not ratepayers — paying for the build. Environmental groups, including the Conservation Law Foundation, immediately called the savings claim a false narrative.
quote:
As attorney general, Healey treated new gas pipe as something the state did not need and should not finance. In November 2015, she released an Analysis Group study and said Massachusetts could meet reliability needs without more gas capacity, and that electric ratepayers should not pay for pipelines. She opposed Kinder Morgan’s Northeast Energy Direct and Spectra’s Access Northeast.
quote:
At a 2022 WBUR event, she told the audience, “Remember, I stopped two gas pipelines from coming into this state,” and said she opposed building more gas infrastructure. In a December 2025 NBC Boston interview, after critics accused her of rewriting that history, she called the earlier projects a “lousy deal” because ratepayers would have paid.

Massachusetts residential electricity is among the most expensive in the country. EIA’s 2024 state profile put the average retail price at 23.94 cents per kilowatt-hour, fifth-highest. For calendar 2025, compiled EIA residential averages put Massachusetts at about 30.48 cents per kilowatt-hour, roughly 76 percent above the U.S. average and behind only Hawaii and California.
quote:
The Fiscal Alliance Foundation estimated last week that a broader Algonquin expansion could save Massachusetts ratepayers on the order of $367 million each winter.
quote:
New England still runs on gas, nuclear, and imports, with oil as the winter insurance policy. Stopping pipe did not replace that stack. It left the region buying more expensive LNG and burning more oil when the weather turned.

The gas company just thowing a bunch of catch phrases in a row to get the Democrats to think it's a good idea?

My Co-op is in process of converting heat and hot water to natural gas. It will cut the cost of oil use down to about 1/3.
NY's Gov. Hochul wants to "save money" by requiring new construction to be all electric. Electric heat and hot water in NY costs between 4 and 6 times as much as natural gas. She's a democrat.

Many of the governors up there need to be pushing approval of new refineries as well. They are so far behind on meeting demand it's not even funny (all 8 of their refineries running at 100% only meet around 15% of demand, and one of those refineries is idle right now).
Want to know why diesel is so expensive in the US despite our refining more than we need nationally? It's stupid shite like this which requires importing it from Europe (or Asia, if you're on the West Coast), making it more costly nationally.

She was vehemently opposed to NG and did a huge study as AG (because that was her job right?)

Massachusetts has to be the worst governed state east of the Mississippi. Am I overlooking any?

Because of those evil oil companies and their record profits.

They force the local power companies to buy electricity from the offshore wind companies, so the fcking consumer is paying for those bird killers, just like they will pay for the gas lines.....but a heck of a lot less.
They are also part of that ponzi scheme RGGI that rips off consumers.
They also get 20% of their power from "clean" hydro quebec........which has drowned 11,500 square miles of boreal forest to do it. So much for environmental clean energy.

So they’re both native Americans?

No they need to take about 10 years to consider the permit. No shortcuts or waivers should be granted.

The muh gas morons will eat this performative BS up though.

A lot of folks in Massachusetts heat their homes with oil. Maybe they should put a windmill in everyone's yard and tell them that they'll just have to go green before the cold weather hits this year.

68,
I feel for you NYC is just as bad. Buried in your "delivery fees", which is more than the actual cost of power, is RGGI ripoff, funding for middle and lower income, systems benefits charge (clean energy, renewables, environmental all of which if you look at them are just NGOs raping you, they dont do shat for the environment), a separate clean energy fund, environmental remediation.
That jacked the power rates up and Hochul EXPLICITLY blamed Trump tariffs for it. There is only one problem Trump EXPLICITLY left electricity out of the trade war. But I bet 80% of NYers believe her.
She sits on the fcking Marcellus gas field and she wont drill or allow pipelines.
And you are correct, any new construction over I think its 3 stories has to be electricity that you can pay a fortune for coming from Canada, rather than a gas field you are literally standing on. Someone needs to look and see what her bank transfers from Canada are.
